A Message From The Principal

Dear Henry Hawk Families

We hope you had a nice weekend and are enjoying the Superbowl.

The pandemic is still with us, but thankfully, the numbers are once again moving in the right direction. The number of cases among CPS students and staff are continuing to fall, with fewer and fewer students needing to learn at home because of exposure to COVID-19.

Even with CPS doing more testing than ever across the district (55,000 tests conducted last week alone), we are detecting fewer positive cases in our schools.

  • 621 students tested positive in CPS for COVID-19 last week, which is less than one-third of the cases we saw two weeks ago.

  • Our positivity rate has dropped for four consecutive weeks and is now just 0.7 percent.

  • Fewer than 3,500 students needed to learn at home last week due to testing positive or being exposed to COVID-19. This number was more than 22,000 students a few weeks ago.

This is great news relative to the past several weeks. But we can’t overlook the fact that these numbers are still much higher than what we were seeing before the surge of the Omicron variant. This is why we must continue to follow the science and do what we know has kept our staff and students safe, including requiring masks in schools.

You may be aware of a court decision last week that is challenging Governor Pritzker’s authority to require certain safety measures in schools, including masks. This decision DOES NOT prohibit CPS from enforcing our key safety measures, which include universal masking for all students and staff, requiring those who test positive or have been exposed to COVID-19 to learn or work from home, and mandating that staff get vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing. We will continue to align with CPS on these key safety measures, because they have allowed us to provide a safe, in-person learning experience for all students.

To help keep our numbers trending in the right direction, we encourage those who have not yet done so to join the more than 93,000 CPS families who have signed their students up for weekly COVID-19 testing at school. Please visit color.com/readycheckgo-cps to sign your child up. We also encourage those who have not yet gotten their children vaccinated to join the 150,000 CPS students who have either been fully vaccinated or received their first dose. Please visit cps.edu/vaccinations for a complete list of vaccine opportunities that are available weekly for your family. Here at Henry, we will have a vaccination opportunity on Monday, March 7th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Please see the information in our newsletter below. Vaccines are the most important and effective thing to do to protect your child and yourself from COVID-19.

Please remember that if your child tests positive for COVID-19, please complete the self report on the following link: https://chicagopsprod.service-now.com/health?id=cps_self_report

As always, we will continue working to provide your children with a safe, healthy learning environment where they can reach their full potential.

Finally, for those of you who may not be aware, Mr. Gutierrez will be taking a family medical leave for the next few weeks. Our Network Chief is confident that as a school community, we will continue supporting our Henry Families while Mr. Gutierrez is away. Please reach out to us if you have any questions as Mr. Gutierrez will be taking time to support his family.

CPS Academic Calendar for the 2022-23 Survey (Due Feb. 18th)

CPS families are being invited to help shape the academic calendar for the 2022-23 school year. Using this survey, you can now indicate which of two calendar options would best meet the needs of your family.

Here is what is the same about both calendars:

  • A 2022-23 school year that begins BEFORE Labor Day.

  • 176 days of instruction for students

  • 12 professional learning days for teachers and school-based staff

  • Two parent-teacher conference days to include BOTH elementary and high school students (one in the fall of 2022 and one in the spring of 2023)

  • Two weeks of winter vacation and one week of spring vacation

  • No student instruction during the entire week of Thanksgiving

Here is a breakdown of what is different about the two calendars:

Option #1: This calendar largely mirrors what is being used in CPS this school year. Highlights include:

  • A school start date of Monday, August 29, 2022 and an end date of Wednesday, June 14, 2023

  • Students complete their first semester after Winter Break in January 2023 (same schedule as our current school year)

  • A more equal distribution of days and weeks across the four academic quarters

Option #2: This calendar aligns more closely with the academic calendars of suburban school districts and local colleges and universities. Highlights include:

  • A school start date of Monday, August 22, 2022 and an end date of Wednesday, June 7, 2023

  • Students complete their first semester BEFORE Winter Break on Friday, December 22, 2022

  • A less even distribution of instructional days and weeks across the four quarters of the school year, due to the completion of the first semester prior to Winter Break

The survey is open now and will close on Friday, February 18 at 5 p.m. We will study your feedback and present a final recommendation to the Chicago Board of Education at their March 23, 2022 meeting. Final details on the approved academic calendar will be shared with families as well.

If the child no longer has symptoms after Day 5, the child will be free to return to school on Day 6 with the following precautions in place:
  • From Days 6-10, students will keep their masks on at all times, including while outdoors, except when eating or drinking.
  • When masks must be removed for eating and drinking, these students will maintain six feet of social distance from others wherever possible.
  • Children who are not yet vaccinated or are not up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines, and who have been identified as close contacts of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 will need to quarantine and learn from home for 5 days.
