Superintendent's Update
Greetings SLCS Families and Staff Members,
It is a very busy time of the school year when we begin wrapping up one school year and preparing for the next one at the same time. As always, there are a number of great things happening at all of our schools. May is one of the most exciting fast paced months of the school year as it is filled with events such as musicals, concerts, and recognition ceremonies just to name a few. These are opportunities for our students to be celebrated and demonstrate all that they have learned throughout the year.
Remember to check us out on Twitter to see all the great things happening in our schools!

Medication Return-End of School Year
If your student has daily and/or emergency medication(s) at their school building, please make sure you contact the school and arrange for a time to come pick it up at the end of the year. Medications cannot be sent home with students. Any medications not picked up by the end of the school year will be destroyed.
Oakland Country Recognizes May as Mental Health Month
May marks Mental Health Month in the United States. It has never been more important than now to recognize the role mental health plays in our overall well-being and helping those in need receive support. When living with a mental health condition or facing a mental health concern, it’s common to feel like no one understands what you’re going through. But many people overcome the mental health challenges they face. You aren’t alone, help is out there, and recovery is possible.

E-Cigarettes/Vaping-What You Need to Know
E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids, with nearly 12 percent of high school students nationwide using e-cigarettes on a regular basis. One-third of US middle school and high school students report using e-cigarettes at one point. The most common type of e-cigarette, when it comes to teens, usually looks like other everyday items, such as highlighters (or these), flash drives or smartwatches (or these). Plus, they come in fun shapes and colors that appeal to younger consumers. You can even buy a hoodie with an e-cigarette in the string.
What teens and most adults don’t realize is that almost all e-cigarettes (Vape) contain nicotine. Even when the packaging states zero nicotine, research has found that most actually do contain nicotine. For example, an individual JUUL cartridge contains the same amount of nicotine as a whole pack of cigarettes. Using nicotine in adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control as the brain keeps developing until about age 25
This past March, the FDA authorized that e-cigarettes can remain on the market. However,it does not mean the products are safe, nor are they "FDA approved," the agency said. "All tobacco products are harmful and potentially addictive," the FDA said in a news release. "Those who do not use tobacco products shouldn't start."
If your student is using e-cigarettes, consult your primary care physician to help develop a plan to stop this harmful habit. For additional resources: visit My Life My Quit.

Wellness
Four in 10 teenagers report they feel “persistently sad or hopeless,” according to a recent CDC survey. A new workshop series for teens can help young people struggling with these kinds of feelings. The online workshops are geared toward helping teens understand the causes and consequences of emotions. Participants will learn how to turn off self-judgment, manage relationships better, and regulate their ups and downs -- with the goal of finding more meaning and purpose in life.
To participate, all you need is an Internet connection to Zoom, paper and pencil, and an open mind. All sessions are free of charge. Click here to REGISTER or visit Michigan.gov/StayWell.

Staff Shoutout
This week's shoutout goes to Teri Melchert, who is an Occupational Therapist with the Early-on Program.
Teri (on the left) goes above and beyond with each family she works with. She exemplifies what it means to be a true early interventionist in which she is empathetic to families, a parent coach, and a huge resource to our whole team. Thank you, Teri, for all you do for our families and our team.
