Dear Angell Community,
Women's History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women in history. The first Women's History Day was held in 1909. Below are some interesting facts about Women's History Month.
(Source: https://www.womansday.com/life/a34908026/womens-history-month-facts/)
- The day became Women's History Week in 1978
- In 1987, Women's History Month began. Every Women's History Month has a theme. The 2023 Women's History Month theme is Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.
- It wasn't until 1965 that all women could legally vote. Women couldn't get credit cards on their own until 1974.
- Women make up 27 percent of Congress.
- Marie Curie was the first woman to receive two Nobel prizes.
- Women now outnumber men in the college-educated labor force.
- Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
- Kamala Harris is the first woman and woman of color Vice President.
At Angell we have done many things to celebrate Women's History Month including conversations at Respect Circle, posters displayed throughout the building (see pictures highlighted throughout the Principal's Post), and Angell Network News stories. Our Family Circle lesson this week will highlight Women's History Month as our students talk about the influential women in their lives. Our students will also watch a video created by our 5th grade choir about the "why" behind Women's History Month.
Many of you may not know but one of Angell's earliest principals was a women. Her name was Minnie Gow Green. She served the Angell community as teacher and principal from 1920-1940. We are proud to continue her legacy of educational excellence.
I also wanted to share some mathematical thinking/problem solving that Ms. Huffer's class completed this week with help from our math coach, Mrs. Miller. We have been working hard to teach students how to show their thinking through the use of pictures. The pictures below represent a small group project where students had to create graphic representations to the story problems they were presented with. Students had to decide what kind of problems they were solving, how best to go about the process and how to explain their thinking.
This work represents some of the professional learning our staff has done over the course of the year in math during our staff meetings. Specifically, we have examined concrete, representational and abstract ways to solve math problems at all levels. The thinking is complex and requires multiple steps and varied modes of thinking as well as the use of varied math tools. Our goal is to empower students to use effective and efficient strategies to solve problems.
