Here's What We Are Learning
Reading Workshop
This week during reading workshop we started our next reading unit: Social Issues: Fired Up to Take Action. During this unit we will be reading several different texts to help us understand how the character is facing social issues, as well as, reading about different topics that inspire us to take action. In addition to this, we will be reading fiction and nonfiction texts at the same time about a specific topic to help us understand it better. We are currently reading I Survived the Shark Attack of 1916 and researching the actual events that took place during this time. Many of the students told me that they own the I Survived series. If they would like to bring their book in, they may.
Writing Workshop
We finished our rough drafts of our Young Author books this week. All of the students were given their book and instructions on publishing these at home. This will be our homework this week. The books will be due back at school on Monday, April 25th.
Math Workshop
During our math workshop this week we began our fractions unit. We worked on understanding parts of a whole, finding fractions of a set, and fractions on a number line. Finding fractions of a set can often be a tough concept for 3rd Graders. We will continue to work on this, as well as, comparing fractions this coming week. In addition to this, we will review area and perimeter.

What's Growing in our Classroom?
Has your child shared with you what we started growing in our classroom? We started growing Frank's romaine lettuce. Our hopes are that we can grow enough lettuce to help feed Frank. We did a little research to see why romaine lettuce is good for tortoises. We found out that romaine lettuce has a lot of nutrients in it. When asked if the students would drink a smoothie with romaine lettuce, most of them replied that they would try it because it is healthy for them. We have been measuring the romaine lettuce and discovered that it grows really fast. Ask your child how much it has grown this week. This coming week we will explore how much romaine lettuce we will need to grow to feed Frank.
