KES Update

August 28, 2020

Big picture

What's Happening at Kirtland Elementary School?

KES is a busy place as we prepare for the upcoming year! Phones have been ringing, furniture is moving, and anticipation is growing! Our building is coming together nicely. We have a wonderful team of caring people who are dedicated to making the year a success! Custodians have done a wonderful job cleaning and setting up our learning spaces, with desks distanced for safety. PTA volunteers have been helping prepare learning materials. Teachers have been putting lots of thought into ways to make learning meaningful and fun, despite the challenges we face. Whether our students are returning to school in person or through a virtual setting, they are sure to be excited, interested, engaged, and safe! I am thankful for the hard work of all of our staff as they have been working very hard. Next week, we welcome our teachers back to school officially. And, soon after that, our students! I am super excited to see them all and start working together!

Plans in Place to Keep Everyone Safe!

  • Please join Mr. VanArnhem and I for the next Town Hall on Wednesday September 2 at 5:00pm. More information and a link will be coming.
  • Due to the restrictions regarding band and choir, our 5th grade students will follow a traditional specials schedule rotation this year.
  • Teachers will be communicating specific information regarding the supply lists, if there are to be any changes.
  • Knowing that bookbags can get heavy quickly, students are not expected to bring ALL supplies on the first day of school. Teachers will communicate more about this.
  • In addition to laptop pick-up next week, teachers will be sending home learning materials for students who have opted for online instruction. Others will be sending materials home on the first day of school, for students to have on hand in case we move to online learning at any time.
  • Teacher assignments will be available after 4:00pm on Friday September 4, 2020 in Infinite Campus.
  • We are very excited to go back to school in a full day model! However, we know plans could change, so in preparation for the possibility of moving to a hybrid model if Lake County moves to a Level Red designation, we want to share AM/PM placement. Generally speaking, students with a last name that begins with A-L will come to school in the morning from 8:45-11:45. Students with a last name that begins with M-Z will be coming in the afternoon from 12:45-3:45. In order to limit occupancy, certain adjustments will need to be made to our general groupings. If this will affect your scheduled time, our school office will contact you early next week.
