The Buzz from Beech
Parent Newsletter - Week of December 6, 2021
A Message from the Principal
Hello Beech Families,
The weather has turned chilly and snow has begun! There has been some wonderful snowmen being built on the playgrounds during recess. We know that snow is fun to play with, but we are encouraging all students not to throw it at each other. We had a few incidents this past week where snow balls were used to hit each other in the face. Hurt feelings and cheeks were had! Please help us encourage your children not to do this by having conversations at home.
We have seen a huge increase in students needing us to provide masks for them. Please know that we are giving them when they are needed, but often run low and sometimes run out of them at arrival. This means we are giving over 50 masks out to children just at the walker/rider area. We are giving between 10-20 out each day to bus riders as well. Help us out by sending your child to school with a mask and a spare!
We have had fun participating in our December to Remember events so far! Check out some pictures of those who have participated.

Safety Comes First
I can honestly say that this week has been one of the most emotional weeks in my educational career. Between COVID, the incident at Oxford High School, and concerns about the well being of my own children as well as all of yours it is clear that now is the time that we need to come together even more. The students and staff at Beech are surely feeling overwhelmed with the emotions that come along with incidents such as these. I know that it is an extremely challenging time to be a parent of school age children and I hate to put anything else on your plate, but I ask that you spend some time this weekend and in the coming weeks to consider some of these ideas:
- Please ensure that you are having conversations with your children about appropriate use of social media. We know that some of our children are active on a variety of apps and websites, but they need to be extremely careful on what they post and what they share. Rumors can spread quickly and cause serious harm. An open and honest conversation about this topic would go a long way. This is another reason why we ask students to have their cell phones turned off and put away for the day. It limits their exposure to social media and allows them to focus on their school work.
- Speak to your children and urge them to reach out to myself or Ms. Evenson directly or through the State of Michigan's Okay2Say tip line at 8-555-OK2SAY or OKAY2SAY@mi.gov if they hear of any potential dangerous actions that may put our school community at harm. We ask students, families, and community members to report all suspicious or threatening activity to law enforcement and the school administration immediately.
- If we are ever in a situation where we have an emergency at Beech, we need students to take the directions of our staff members seriously. In moments of crisis, time is the most important factor. When decisions are made and directions are give we truly need students to quickly comply so we can keep everyone safe. We will be practicing this through an additional lockdown drill this upcoming week.
I would like to thank you all for your support and patience during this time.

Student Birthday Celebrations
Beech does not allow for cupcakes, balloons, pizza, etc, to be brought in to celebrate student birthdays. We know that this could be disappointing for some children and for that we apologize. We have to monitor for food allergies and ensure that academic time is honored. Thank you for your support and understanding.
