Sartartia MS -- Exemplary Education Every Day -- 9.26.19
WE CAN ALL START BY SAYING HELLO!
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. SHP’s sole purpose is to educate and empower parents, schools and community organizations on how to prevent gun violence BEFORE it happens by providing mental health & wellness early-identification and intervention programs, gun safety storage practices and advocating for sensible state and federal violence prevention policy. For more information about Sandy Hook Promise and our other school and community-based prevention programs and training, please visit www.sandyhookpromise.org. Make the Promise and together we can protect children from preventable gun violence.
If you or your student would like to discuss ways to start and sustain the SAVE Promise Club at Sartartia, please let our associate principal know at sunday.johnson@fortbendisd.com.

Jags are on the Move!
Dear Jag Families,
Last week's weather event has prompted us to think even further ahead for contingency plans during a variety of natural events. Again, thank you for your patience and know that we are always working to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and our community. Once again, on behalf of everyone at SMS, I hope that you and your family did not sustain any property damage or loss.
Remember tomorrow is county fair day and we do not have school.
Thank you for your continued support for our JAGS in Volleyball, Football, Dance, Band, Orchestra, and Cheer. Thank you again for all you do in partnership with SMS. You are the best parents in FBISD and we hope to see you soon.

Rachel Ramirez is an 8th grader at SMS and always willing to lend a helping hand. She is empathetic towards struggling students and tries her best to help them understand what they are learning. Academics may not always come easy to her, but she has proven herself as a life-long learner by advocating for herself and making outstanding progress since she first joined our school in 7th grade. Rachel is a compassionate citizen who exhibits care and concern for others. She strives to be inclusive and embrace differences among all students. Outside of school, Rachel is a competitive softball player, spending most nights either at softball practice or at the gym. Most of her weekends are spent at softball tournaments around the Greater Houston area.
Staff Spotlight
Judy Weng has been teaching English as a Second Language at Sartartia for 6 years and has been in Fort Bend ISD for 20 years. She can’t believe how quickly the time has passed! She loves teaching students that are new to the United States and learning English. She recognizes the unique perspective and wealth of knowledge they bring to our school and community. Mrs. Weng is an incredible advocate for her students and believes that we can all learn from each other. She is married with 3 kids: a 4th grader, a 3rd grader, and an 18 month old. Both she and her husband graduated from Clements HS, and she is surrounded by a family of educators including her brother, sister, and dad who was a math instructor at Houston Community College for 35 years. Mrs. Weng is a huge fan of the University of Texas! TEXAS! FIGHT!

Hey Jag Parents!
We are so excited about the start of our 2019-2020 school year!! We have BIG plans for this year: exciting new programs and learning opportunities for you and your child to help you navigate through their middle school years. We hope to see you at parent nights and other learning opportunities that we are offering this year. Be on the lookout for dates/times in the parent newsletters and at Open House this week. Below we have included some of the things that are coming up so that you are aware:
No Place for Hate
Mrs. McCune is looking for students to serve on this years No Place for Hate committee. The committee will meet once a month to help plan 3 school wide activities to support acceptance by combating bias, bullying and hatred, and creating and maintaining a positive climate here at SMS. If your child is interested in being on the committee, please have them sign up in the student center or tell their grade level counselor at lunch 🙂
Level Changes
We will start to process level changes on Monday, September 9th. If your child would like to change their level from Pre-AP to Academic or vise versa, please send them to the students center to pick up a level change form. Please know that there are many steps to this form and the form will need to be completed before any level change is processed. A few things to note ** A conference between teacher/parent will need to happen before any level change is processed **Level changed will not be granted if a child has a 75 or above in the course, per district policy that is provided for you on the back of the form.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email your grade level counselor.
Be an SMS Mentor
We are looking for adults in our community to volunteer their time mentoring Sartartia students. We will be accepting new mentors this year at SMS until Friday, September 27, 2019. Students who are in need of a reliable, comforting person to help guide them, will be selected by staff referral. The mandatory district orientation (MUST have every 3 years) is: Wed, September 18, 2019 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM at the Fort Bend ISD Administration Building
If you have any questions regarding the application process, please reach out to: VIPS@fortbendisd.com or katherine.friedel@fortbenisd.com if you are interested in volunteering.
