A Note from the Principal
Dear SPB Families,
Although it was a brisk day, the sun was shining brightly on our 2019 Walk-a-Thon for Catholic Education last week. Our students enjoyed walking the neighborhood with one another, stopping at stations along the way, listening to music on their return, and finding out the winners of our lap walking contest and the coveted Golden Shoe Award. We extend a huge THANK YOU to our always supportive and amazing PTO! Special thanks to Melissa Vogley, PTO committee chair, for her unwavering efforts to make this fundraiser so successful, as well as PTO committee members Kate Herberth, Kelly Miller, Colleen Grossner, Mary Ellen Moore, Amy Goff, Beth Detzel, and Katie Orlando. Thank you to the moms, dads, and grandparents who came out and walked with us.
Finally, the money raised at present is almost $25,000, and we THANK YOU, our parents, for your efforts and your support. Your children really got into the spirit behind our school theme,
“Continuing Forward in Faith, Hope & Love.” In case you haven’t heard, Mrs. Popelka’s class won the coveted Golden Shoe award for more laps walked per child than any other class in the school. Congratulations to all who made this a truly wonderful event! We certainly are blessed!

Green Knight of the Quarter
Anna Rini is an eighth grader who was selected as our first Green Knight for the year! As many teachers shared, Anna seems to be the perfect choice as our next Green Knight. Her positive attitude, strong work ethic, and kindhearted nature certainly stand out. Mrs. Mickol wrote, “I would like to formally nominate Anna Rini as the Green Knight of the Quarter. Anna has such a magnetic personality. She is always smiling, saying hi to anyone she sees, and always seems happy. During the summer, she volunteered to help do extra set up for Bible Camp and also helped me organize and sort my classroom books. She is a natural leader and I can't wait to see where God continues to do with her!”
Anna lives with her parents, Jessica and Mike, her older brother Mikey, and their dog Perro.
When asked what kind of things she enjoys doing with her family, Anna responded, “We eat dinner together as a family, and we love to celebrate birthdays with all of our cousins.” Anna has many activities that she enjoys. Her interests range from sports such as softball, volleyball, and basketball to coloring and reading a good book. Because of this, it wasn’t a surprise to hear that reading class with Mrs. Krogman is also Anna’s favorite subject. When asked about her plans for the future, she explained that she will be attending Mayfield High school next year. In the distant future, Anna would like to have a family with many dogs and possibly become a doctor. Mrs. Longano, Anna’s aunt, believes that Anna is a perfect choice to be a Green Knight because she is happy and always willing to help. Mr. Rini agreed and stated that Anna has a great work ethic, leadership skills and is very task-oriented. Mrs. Rini shared that Anna is a Green Knight because she is very loving and cares about others. Both parents consider this a great honor for their daughter. They said, “SPB is such a great school, and there are so many great kids here.”
Friendly, positive, thoughtful, and hardworking were words repeatedly used to describe Anna. Mrs. Curtis, Anna’s fourth grade teacher, shared that Anna is a diligent student who never gives up, and her positive attitude is contagious. Mrs. Kreutzer wrote, “She has a very strong work ethic and is very motivated to always do her best. Anna is a true example of what a Green Knight should be. Anna shows compassion for her classmates and her friends.” Mrs. Peko commented that Anna is a ray of sunshine in and out of the classroom, and Mrs. Kulick said that Anna can always be counted on to lend a helping hand or cheer up a friend. Mrs. Connors summed it up well by writing, “I can easily attest to Anna’s congenial personality and persistent work ethic. Her enthusiasm for life is unbounded. A fine young woman of great character!” Congratulations, Anna, on this well-deserved honor!

Looking Ahead to Halloween
There are so many opportunities for our students to enjoy Halloween. As a school community, we are asking that parents do not send in any candy treats for Grades K-8. We are aware that your children will receive candy in many other places. Should a teacher need help with a Halloween celebration, he or she will give room captains a call for whatever is needed.
Halloween Attire
Students in grades K, 1, & 2 may dress down in orange and black on Thursday, October 31 in order to participate in Student Council Halloween activities taking place in the Jette Gym. Please, no Halloween costumes. Students in grades 3-8 may add orange and black to their uniforms that day.

Holiday Craft Show-Saturday, November 23
Playground/Lunchroom Volunteer Sign Ups
Thank you, Grade 7 Parents/Guardians, for signing up for October! Most of the beginning of the month is full, but many days at the end of the month are still waiting for volunteers!
The links for November for Grade 6, and December for Grade 5 can be found below. With the holiday season just ahead, we know that you will want to get the dates that work for your busy schedule!
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:00-1:00. We are so grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the grade level link to pick a time convenient for you: Grade 7, Grade 6, Grade 5.
