From the Desk of Mr. Morris: Student Government Day (April 2017)
On Friday April 7th, I chaperoned two of our students, Senior Robert Bullock and Junior Karimah Land, to Massachusetts’ 70th Annual Student Government Day. Once we arrived at the State House in Boston, our students, along with students from over 185 other schools from across the state, took on the roles of governor, state senators and representatives, along with Supreme Judicial Court Justices.
Governor Baker addressed the student representatives at the beginning of the day with a speech encouraging cross-aisle communication, asking students to seek out and learning from those who are different from each other. During the rest of the field trip, the students discussed, debated, and ultimately voted on two proposed bills (hands-free driving, school access to students’ social media). Actual state representatives were on hand to guide the students as they played the roles of senators passing a bill at the state level. Both Karimah and Robert told me they had a great time as they experienced the legislative process first-hand.
