Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . April 1, 2021
Dear Deer Hill Families,
With today being April 1st, a different person would have a newsletter full of April Fool's foolery and fun. However, I am about as gullible as they come and am definitely more the recipient than the mastermind when it comes to jokes and pranks . Case in point -- much to the delight of her art class today, I did in fact try to pick up Mrs. Berman's pencil that was hot glued to the floor. What can I say, I like things tidy! So I'll just launch this newsletter by wishing you a wonderful long weekend. If you celebrate Passover or Easter, I wish you a safe and happy holiday as well.
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School
P.S. Our next newsletter will be published approximately April 16.

Need to Knows
- As will be communicated in a separate email, Aspen progress reports will be published later today and can be accessed at that time via the student or parent portal on our CPS Aspen Login page.
- Please note that in response to feedback from families, CPS nurses have expanded snack options for elementary students. Please see the revised list which is also provided in the flyers section of this newsletter.
- Please see the revised district calendar which was approved by School Committee on 3.25.21.
- Thank you for remembering that our drop off window for cohort A is 9:05-9:15 and for cohort B is 9:15-9:25. Our pick up window for cohort A is 3:15-3:30 and for cohort B is 3:30-3:45. In particular, if cohort B cars arrive before their window at dismissal, they must wait for their students to be dismissed to the gym. This creates a backup of cars and makes it difficult for cohort A families to pick up their students. Your continued patience and adherence to these time windows is appreciated.
- Our RISE before and after school program is fully operational and can help you avoid the arrival and dismissal crush. Please visit the Town of Cohasset rec website for more information.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- Our March Madness book brackets have scored their first two winners in this year's Women Warriors tournament -- One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul and Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatiuh. We'll soon know the winner of our third contest. . . they've all been incredibly close matches!
- This week we concluded our Read-a-Thon, Sailing the Seven Seas of Reading, sponsored by the PSO and Mrs. MacDonald. It was great to see students set smart reading goals (or as us pirates say, "goal-ds") and engage in spirited activities around our theme. I think the daily pirate joke submissions for morning announcements were a definite highlight. "What's a pirate's favorite exercise?" "What did the pirate say when he got his leg stuck in the freezer?" -- I'll leave you hanging with those riddles!
- Deer Hill is thrilled to welcome Farmer Jon Belber from Holly Hill Farm back to our garden this spring. Farmer Jon began the planting season this week by working with 5th grade students. Not only did they gain lessons in gardening, but my eavesdropping caught rigorous math conversations that tapped into the concepts of area, perimeter, multiplication, and fractions.
- April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Students wore blue Cohasset Strong t-shirts today both to show school spirit at the conclusion of the Read-a-Thon as well as to show solidarity for those with autism. Special education teacher, Ms. Kurker, and adjustment counselor, Mrs. Dolan, shared resources with classroom teachers including links to the read aloud, A Different Kind of Brilliant as well as a short companion video that explains autism to children.
- Please take a moment to look at the photos below and see if you can spot Althea, an honorary member of Mrs. Parrell's 4th grade, who is wearing her own Cohasset Strong t-shirt. From Mrs. Parrell: "Althea is in her 90s and lives locally. She has a phenomenal life story which highlights living in Africa among other places. She is a talented artist and poet. Our class has connected with her since February. We initially wrote her Valentines. But our relationship has grown once we realized the variety of her talents and interests. She shared her poems with us. We took one called The Defiant Toad and drew images that her words made in our minds. The students sent her FlipGrids and shared their pictures and questions about her poetry. She sent us video messages back. Now, we are going to try to connect with her around the book Restart by Gordon Korman. It’s a novel that highlights intergenerational friendships."
