May / June Newsletter
I hope that you are doing well and enjoying the Spring weather. After being on leave for 8 weeks, I have returned to work with a new knee. I was delighted to join our Blazers at Prom and After Prom this past weekend. The staff at the University of Maryland, Alumni Center, shared with me that our Blazers are very kind and a joy to host for Prom.
Our Blazers represented Montgomery County Public Schools in the It's Academic Finals competition, pictured above are Coaches Sean Rada, Ms. Partan, and I cheering on our team before the competition. We are in the last marking period of the school year, and although we are in the midst of spring testing, students are expected to attend all classes on time. We want students to give their best effort and maintain a high standard for their attendance and course grades.
This week is Teacher / Staff Appreciation Week is May 8 - 12!🍎 I invite you to show your appreciation by completing the form below. Send a message of gratitude to our dedicated teachers/staff. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScGv-5cFF_8ucPmOppi1ew4uZxRh5JDzi9JKcOmlrn3g9Ca0A/viewform
This summer, we have two major construction projects at our school. The first is a two-phase full roof replacement. Phase I will be starting immediately at the end of this school year and will conclude in August. Phase II is scheduled for next Summer. During the roof replacement projects, students are not permitted on school grounds. We will update you on the projects as more information becomes available.
We are excited about our athletic field enhancements. Work on our track field has been completed with stadium lights. The practice fields, located behind our school, are scheduled to be completed this Summer; improvements include site preparation, Bermuda grass, irrigation, and lighting.
Finally, next month we will recognize the following staff as they depart BLAIR for RETIREMENT and THANK them for their service to our school and community:

Blair Athletics News
It is mid-May which means post-seasons for all our spring sports teams as well as end-of-year celebrations and informational meetings! Spring teams have been doing very well as students, athletes, and young adults; we are proud of all their accomplishments and their path toward their potential. We had a full complement of spring sports including all of our JV teams in boys' lacrosse, girls' lacrosse, baseball, softball, and track and field. Varsity teams will continue into the post-season.
Allied Softball is undefeated and earned Division Champions honors and the number 1 seed for playoffs. They won their county semi-final over Damascus. Blair will host Sherwood in the county championship on Wednesday, May 10 at 3:45 in the Blazer Gym.
Boys Lacrosse earned the number 4 seed and will host Paint Branch on Wednesday, May 10 at 7:15 in the Blazer Stadium. If they win, they will travel to Blake on Friday for the next round of playoffs.
Girls Lacrosse had a record-tying year with 10 wins in the regular season and earned the number 2 seed in playoffs. They will host Wheaton on Wednesday, May 10 at 5:30 at Blazer Stadium. If they win, they will host the winner of Blake-Paint Branch on Friday, May 12 in the Blazer Stadium.
Softball and Baseball seedings have not been fully determined but Blair will most likely host first-round games on Thursday, May 9, time and location, tbd. Both teams, most likely will play games at 7 pm and then will travel for second-round games, Baseball’ssecond round is on Saturday, and Softball is on Monday, May 15.
Track & Field has had lots of success during the regular season and at Invitationals; the most notable being earning the first-place trophy at the Bullis Track Invitational! They are headed to Seneca Valley for the county championships on Tuesday, May 9, and Wednesday, May 10. The B Team will travel to Einstein on Saturday, May 16 for the county B championships.
Boys Volleyball is undefeated this year and has earned the number 2 seed throughout the playoffs (second to Churchill who is also undefeated but lost fewer sets). Blair defeated RM in the first round and will host Sherwood in second-round action on Wednesday, May 10 at 6:30 in the Blazer Gym. They are regular season Division champions!
Coed volleyball earned playoff honors (only 16 teams make playoffs) and traveled to Northwest in the first round. They lost to a solid NW team and their post-season is complete. They had a terrific regular season and are one of the terrific programs here at Blair in the spring season, well-coached and with lots of energy, talent, and resiliency.
Both girls' and boys' tennis are in their post-season which started on May 8. They play individual and doubles matches which will eventually declare individual and team post-season honors and regional and state play.
Gymnastics heads to the county championships on Tuesday, May 9 with the varsity meet at Whitman then to the county B championships on Thursday, May 11 at Springbrook. They are regular season Division champions!
Congratulations to the several senior Blazer student-athletes who will continue playing sports at the next level! The signing ceremonies have been celebrations of hard work, both in the classroom and in the sports arenas. A list of signings will be available by the end of May. So proud of all our senior student-athletes and look forward to watching those that opt to play at the next level.
The Varsity Awards Night will be held on May 31 at 7 pm in the Blair Alumni Auditorium. We will recognize all our varsity teams and student-athletes with a ceremony that brings each varsity team on stage with their coaches to review their season, celebrate their accomplishments, and hear the award winners. We will also announce the senior awards and the end-of-year larger Athletics program awards. The night will end with a video compilation of the 2022-2023 athletics year video.
Lastly, we will host an Informational night on June 6 at 5:30 pm in the Blazer Alumni Auditorium for all students interested in participating in high school sports at Blair. This is open to all incoming 9th graders as well as all students and their parents who want to gather information and meet the athletics staff at Blair.
A huge thank you to the Blair Booster Association who support all the efforts of Blair Athletics and the awards ceremonies and informational nights. We could not do our athletics program without the parental support that we have … thank you!
Blair coaches and Athletics staff and act emails can be found on the Blair Athletics 2022-2023 list.
The Blair Blazers Athletics website has lots of information for all including the schedules. County Sports Zone also has all schedules for all sports: https://www.countysports.zone/.

Kindness Corner
My name is Farzaneh Nabavian and I am the Parent Community Coordinator (PCC) at Blair, I also am the PCC for Takoma Park Middle School and Takoma Park Elementary School. You can visit my website to learn more about what I do as well as a wealth of resources.
I am always looking for ways that we can assist our students and families and provide them with resources. I work collaboratively with the administration and school staff. The Kindness Corner at Blair high school is now in its 4th year! It has been a great success with the support of Ms. Johnson, the administration team, school staff, Blair HS PTSA, community members, and community organizations.
We are so grateful for all the contributions we have received in many ways to support our school community and continue the mission of the Kindness Corner! We appreciate your kindness.
During the 2022-23 school year, we began Freebie Fridays during lunch and tried to do that once a month! So far, we have had four Freebie Fridays and we are getting ready to do the last one for this year on Friday, May 19th during lunch in SAC!
Freebie Friday is an event in the Student Activity Center on a selected date during lunch and it is open to ALL students at Blair. We have lots and lots of items for students to look through and get what they want FREE!! Ms. Johnson supports the event and attends them as well😊

In May, we had the Freebie Prom attire event for Blazer seniors! Thanks to our student volunteers and many generous donations, we were able to give away so many items in addition to the attires!
If you have any questions or know of anyone at Blair HS that may benefit from PCC and/or Kindness Corner, please share my information.

Respect and Safety in our Community
Please remind your teen that Montgomery Blair High School is a closed campus and students are not permitted to leave campus during lunch or the school day. Students with partial day schedules may leave campus at the end of their school day.
We do not lock students in the building but there are consequences for leaving school during the school day which violates school policy. Please speak with your teen about this important rule. In the event of a school emergency or lockdown, students who are off campus will not be permitted to re-enter our building. In addition, there is no staff supervision off campus.
After school, students can respectfully visit businesses as needed. I am disappointed to hear from our neighboring businesses that students are not behaving appropriately in their establishments and that is not the Blair Way!
