What's Happening in Fourth Grade...
M-Step: Our final M-Step date is May 22nd for the Math test. Please make sure your child is getting lots of rest over the next week as well as having a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. Please talk with them about doing their best on the test. Let's rock it out and show everyone what you've learned!
Social Studies: The last few weeks we have been discussing some of the Core Democratic Values we have written into our Constitution. We've talked about Rule of Law, Justice, Freedom of Religion, Patriotism, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Michigan Model: The fourth grade classes have wrapped up their Michigan Model units with lessons on the dangers of secondhand smoke, the influences of family and friends, as well as how advertisements try to sway your opinions.
Writing: This week students brought home their Book Reviews and we will be ending the year with a unit on Opinion pieces.
Math: Fourth grade students are working hard on area and perimeter. Students often get the two confused. A fact that students often overlook when studying perimeter is that it is a single-dimension linear measurement (e.g., length). Area is a measure of how much space a two-dimensional object occupies. The use of grid paper to initially explore area is very common because it provides a model for square units.
We're also looking at relative size of measurement units in Chapter 12. There is an inverse relationship between the size of the unit and the numeric measure. Measuring objects with different sized units, building tables comparing units, and discussing the appropriate unit to measure a quantity, can all help build this essential understanding. We've used this chapter as part of our science unit.
