Celebrating Our Growth
This week May 18-22 we celebrate our Classified Employees! Thank you to all of our classified staff for supporting our Sea King Students social emotional and academic needs. We couldn't do this job without you!
Last week Janet and I were able to peek in at all of the great work you are all doing with students. You all have learned new technology skills during this journey. It is really an accomplishment to see every teacher connecting with students and making sure that students have the resources that they need to learn. We admire your creativity, enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and implement new teaching strategies each week.
This week we will be following up on your ATLAS entries regarding student followup. Remember this code "Assignment #3" is to indicate where followup is needed. In addition to this indicator, you may at any time during the week enter needs on the Student Connectivity Form that Janet and I are checking daily for student support followup.
If you need assistance connecting with students from our administrative team or a translator please use the following link to enter your needs and we will follow up with contacting student and will then followup with you on our connections.
Have a great week!
Tina and Janet

This Week's Strategy- Book Club with Students
Many of you have been using Epic as an online library for students to read at home. Kids can search based on their interests and "borrow" books to read on their tablets or laptops. Teachers love that they can see how long and how often their students are reading, and which books they've finished. Epic creates a report about each students' reading habits, and it's available for the teacher to review each day.
I'm sure our students miss the novel reading that used to be part of our daily schedule. My students used to beg me to read just five more minutes most days. Teachers can assign a book to the whole class (click assign and the book can be sent to every kid's Epic account). For example, Bridge to Terabithia is available on Epic and would be appropriate for upper grades. Tell kids to read a certain amount of the book during the week, and schedule a book talk on Zoom or Teams. Start with personal connection questions, such as, "How did you feel about the main character?," or "Have you ever had a similar experience?" Then sprinkle in a few comprehension questions- you know, because we are teachers and that is our super power. Epic will be free until the end of June, so even if you don't finish the book as a class, students who enjoy it will have enough time to finish the story.
Best regards,
Melissa Stephenson

Resources For Supporting English Learners
Distance Learning for English Learners
Message From Multilingual/Multicultural Office
The Multilingual/Multicultural Office is excited to share that we have created a new webpage, Distance Learning for English Learners, where our families and students can access tools for English learners all in one place. This new webpage includes several resources for students to explore and practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities! There are also resources to support core curriculum and promote English language development (ELD) for our students and families.
Resources for our dual language immersion students and languages other than English courses are also included here.

Guidelines for Providing Distance Learning for English Learner Students
Message From Multilingual/Multicultural Office
The Multicultural/Multilingual Office has developed the attached guidelines and expectations for your teachers to follow as they plan distance learning opportunities for all students. These guidelines provide support to teachers regarding the key considerations for developing distance learning that supports English learners, specifically in designated and integrated ELD.
Please incorporate them into your PL with your staff and be aware that we are in the process of developing PL and other tools to assist teachers to provide rigorous, interactive instruction for ELs. We will notify you as they become available.
