Teacher of the Week:
Mrs. Michele Benefield
Why did you choose to teach at Daphne Middle School?
I started teaching at DMS the last year that we still had the 6th grade here and I taught Language Arts. I really loved it here but due to budget cuts I had to find a job the next year in Mobile County. I came back the next year though and have been here ever since.
What are your expectations for your Students?
I expect my students to bring their “A” game to class. I get excited about learning and expect my students to do the same. I expect them to respect me, each other and themselves and help to have a productive learning environment. We are a team!
Have you ever taught or worked at a different school? How long have you been at Dms?
I have taught at Summerdale, at two private schools, in Mobile, at J. Larry Newton, and at DMS. I have taught at DMS for 8 years. I have been teaching a total of 15 years. At DMS, I have taught Language Arts, Science, Math Extension, Digital Enrichments, and Science.
Why did you choose to teach Science?
I love science. I like to do labs and explore how things work.
What makes you unique as a teacher?
I feel that I am unique as a teacher in that I am very creative. I don’t like to do things the same way. I tend to think outside the box. I also am able to teach the “big picture.” If a student doesn’t understand something, I have several ways to explain things in order to find their individual learning style. I am also really good with technology.
What is your favorite part of teaching only advanced classes?
I don’t really have a favorite part of teaching only advanced classes. A student is a student to me. I became a teacher to help be a role model and an example. While it is nice to only teach one subject, I just love to teach and it really doesn’t matter to me what the subject is, what type of students I have, or where I teach.
Teacher of the Year!
Mrs. Holt
What made you decide to become a teacher?
When I started baby sitting at 12 yrs old. When I was 15, I baby sat three girls while their parents went to Mexico. They honeschooled and I was their teacher while their parents were gone. I absolutely knew then I wanted to be a teacher.
What's your favorite thing about being a teacher?
My favorite part of teaching is when I go out in public and former students say “hey Holt, I made it” what a great feeling that you helped shape their sweet lives.
How long have you been teaching?
13 yrs
How do you feel about being teacher of the year?
The Bill of Rights
What do you like about DMS?
I love DMS so much. The faculty is like my family, we are so close. The community is so supportive of our school. The students especially that student who thirsts for knowledge.
6. I am actually very humbled by the nomination and the win. I have amazing friends who have won and I am so grateful to know hard work is worth it!
