East End Elementary News
October 16, 2023
Dear East End Families,
We are very excited with the news release of East End's Excellent Rating on the School Report Card! Lots of hard work and dedication from our East End Team and students made this possible. With the news release this past Tuesday, the results were no longer embargoed and we can share this with as we begin many days of celebration with our students and faculty. We'll be asking for your help with two duty-free lunch days for our faculty in upcoming days. We have special events for our students planned, as well. We plan to celebrate lots with everyone for this great success!
Results like this happen when students work to achieve their very best as they are supported and led by an amazing faculty. Your support as parents is also very important! More news coming soon about our upcoming celebrations. Thanks to everyone for your support that made these results possible!
Our second graders will begin their testing tomorrow with ITBS and CogAT. Students across South Carolina will be testing this month in anticipation of third grade gifted and talented identification. We are working to provide a great environment for our students during this week of testing. Your efforts to have the students to school on time along with a healthy breakfast, a full night's sleep and a "can-do" attitude would be great appreciated. Please read the letter below that is shared again for your information.
Thank you for your support of our Open House Literacy/STEM night this past week. We will have our second night on Thursday, November 30th. We hope you can join us then, too! Details will be shared in upcoming newsletters.
Pictures will be made this Wednesday for possible purchase by families as well as for use in our school's yearbook this year. Students who do not have a media denial will all have their pictures made this Wednesday. Look for proofs coming home soon for you to order if you would like to do so. Make-up pictures will be made on November 30th.
Our East End team will send out information about our upcoming clubs this week. Look for this information to be shared by the conclusion of the week.
Due to conflicts with other local Bazaars, the PTO has moved the Bulldog Bazaar to Saturday, December 9th. The PTO has a Skating Spirit Night this Thursday, October 19th from 6:00 - 8:00p.m. at Roller Time Family Skate Center.
We are looking forward to a great week!
As always, thank you for your support of East End Elementary.

Second Grade ITBS and CogAT Testing 10/16 - 10/20
Dear Second Grade Parents,
Our East End second graders will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) and ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) beginning Monday, October 16th. Second grade students throughout the state of South Carolina are required by the state to participate in an aptitude test (CogAT) and an achievement test (ITBS) to identify the students for gifted and talented classes that will begin in the third grade. The School District of Pickens County will be administering these tests Monday, October 16 - Friday, October 20.
There are several subtests included in the testing. The schedule of subtests is as follows:
October 16 - Verbal Battery (CogAT)
October 17 – Quantitative Battery (CogAT)
October 18 - NonVerbal Battery (CogAT)
October 19- Reading (Iowa)
October 20 – Math (Iowa)
The screening process for gifted and talented identification is a multi-step process. The first part of that process begins with the administration of the ITBS and the CogAT. These scores provide us information to help in selection for our gifted and talented program, which begins in 3rd grade, as well as gives us important information about the students' aptitude and achievement as measured by each of these tests.
There is no special preparation for each day’s testing. The most important thing is for students to be well-rested. Parents are asked to ensure that students have a full night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast each morning, and arrive to school on time. A breakfast that includes some type of protein seems to help students concentrate better than a breakfast of sugary foods. It is important that students arrive at school on time especially during testing. Research also shows that hydration is important, too. Having plenty of fluids is important for the brain to be able to be alert and allow each child to do his or her best.
Thank you for your help as we administer these tests to our students. A reminder that there is no special preparation. Students need to have a “Can Do” attitude and arrive to school with a full night’s sleep. We will remind them at school to do their best and not worry about the test. Our district’s GT Coordinator will confirm student placements in May 2023 as the GT scoring process is completed. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school. We will be glad to assist you.
Sincerely,
Tammy Day, principal
