Message from the Athletic Office
Greetings Hornet Fans,
I hope this newsletter finds you and your families doing well during these unprecedented times. This week Governor Pritzker extended the “stay at home” order through April 30th, 2020. The result means that all schools and school related activities will remain cancelled. As we continue to navigate through these days, I want you to know that everyone in CUSD 50 is thinking about and worried about our students. Students please follow the mandated guidelines and stay safe. During this time, your teachers have been working countless amounts of hours to provide you with lessons in an effort to extend your learning. Please make sure you are staying engaged with your teachers and classes. While we can not meet face to face, we have the ability to meet through electronic means. Please know that if you need ANYTHING, your teachers, coaches, support staff and administrators are here to serve you. Reach out and let us know how we can help you.
The IHSA, yesterday (4/1/2020), released new information regarding spring sports seasons. The good news...they are still working and planning for season extensions in the event we are able to get back to school starting May 1st. I wanted to share this information with you as it is a sign of hope!
Athletes: While you can’t workout with your friends, please attempt to stay active. Go for a run in the morning, make a goal of completing 100 push-ups a day, 200 sit-ups, etc. Reach out to your coaches or log in to your PLT4M account for other workouts. The idea is that we stay as HEALTHY and PREPARED as possible. Please be safe and know that we are all thinking about you.
Community: We know you miss supporting your Hornets and we miss you. We miss seeing the smiling faces at all of the events and we miss the most passionate fans in Illinois. I have two challenges for you. First, STAY HEALTHY and heed all recommendations. Second, when we are able to resume activities, please PACK the stands and continue to support the Hornets. We look forward to seeing you again.
Please stay up to date on COVID-19 updates from the IHSA here
We are in this together!
Best Wishes,
Andrew Walters

2019-2020 Winters Sports Awards Night
Girls Basketball
The girls finished the season with the most wins (12) since the 2007-2008 season and tied for the most wins in 22 years. Along the way, while racking up wins, the ladies won the programs 1st conference game in 8 years. This was also the first win as part of the KRC conference. During the season, the team also saw many individual accomplishments including Lauren Shafer earning Northwest Herald Athlete of the week for the week of December 29th.
This year’s MVP is Lauren Shafer. Lauren was also voted on to the KRC First-Team All-Conference team.
Boys Basketball
While not earning victories, we took two 20+ win teams down to the wire losing in overtime and on a last second prayer. Moving forward, we plan to see our youth shine and a resurgence in basketball. Seniors, you set a foundation for the future and our returners will look to add to that expectation and compete for years to come.
This years’s most valuable player is Damon Mueller. He also earned 1st team All Conference.
Wrestling
This season our wrestling team was able to capture a KRC conference title finishing the season undefeated in conference and 25-6 overall. This marked the first 25 win season since 2012. The season came to an end at the Dual Team state tournament. The team finished in the top 8 of the Class 1A state championships. En route to the state tournament we saw our wrestlers win a regional title for the first time since 2015.
This year’s MVP is Nik Jimenez. Nik was also selected to the KRC all conference team.
Joining Nik on the KRC all conference team are Nathan Rosas, Brett Lovell, Brian Hernandez and Bryce Fiegel
Cheer
Cheer season was able to hit a high score of 66. We are extremely excited for the future of Harvard Cheer.
This year’s MVP was Crystal Sanchez.
Chess
This year, the Chess Team was rebuilt with the help of both veteran players and players new to the game. Quite literally, some of the new players did not know some of the fundamental rules of chess to start the season. In just a few weeks, however, all of our players were competitive
students of the game. With a team comprised of mostly new players, we finished with a conference record of 4-10-0
This years MVP for Chess is Andrew Dudley.

Tips from the Athletic Trainer
Wash your hands
Clean your hands often
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
