CURRICULUM

Mount Vernon Community School District Curriculum Cycle

Good curriculum work can take teams up to 3 years. After analyzing standards, creating assessments, and implementing instruction, curriculum teams may decide they do not need to purchase any piloted curriculum resources and that is just fine.

YOUR CHANCE TO GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK in regards to Curriculum Leadership for Learning!

The image below is from ASCD Source.

Once a month, Grant Wood Area Education Agency hosts a meeting for local curriculum leaders and we Zoom into the Statewide Curriculum Leaders meeting put on by the Iowa Department of Education. I attend as our districts' representative locally and bring back what I learn to the district leadership team and teachers. I enjoy the collaboration with other local leaders of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. I have been paired up with curriculum mentors whom I collaborate with about once a month. At the beginning of last school year, this image was shared with us. Recently, it was re-shared on the ASCD Source.

I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK!

1. What am I doing well in regards to the image below?

2. What are the areas for improvement?

3. How do you see yourself engaged in this work as a teacher?

Send me an email and let me know.

Iowa's Differentiated Accountability & the Healthy Indicators of a Successful Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Framework

The Every Student Succeeds Act School Designations will come out again in January on the Iowa School Performance Profile.

In Iowa, we are measured using the healthy indicators of a Multi-Tiered System of Support. The image below explains the system. The key components of an MTSS framework are also listed below. Our schools can be designated as comprehensive, targeted, or met. There will be no new schools in Iowa with comprehensive designations in January of 2020. Targeted schools last year will remain targeted for 2 more years. Schools who met expectations in 2019 could be targeted in 2020.

We are working diligently in all buildings to improve our Multi-Tiered System of Supports this school year. Ask our leaders or instructional coaches about the actions we have taken.

  • Strategies to help boost the skills of a group not performing as well as you would like them to in your classroom
  • Some ideas for extending student learning
  • Creating clear learning goals or targets for your students to achieve based on your classroom or grade level standards or the Iowa Core
  • Support in sorting student work/evidence/tests or calibrate grading as a team
  • Guidance on having data conversations and determining next steps for instruction as a team
  • Differentiating instruction
