News from the Safe and Drug Free Committee
Prevention Leadership Conference Opportunity for 10 students
On Nov 3-4, NCADA (the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse) will be hosting a Prevention Leadership Conference, “Expedition Prevention,” at the Holiday Inn - St. Louis. Nationally known keynote speakers and regional experts in the field of prevention will share their messages and knowledge in the areas of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and will help provide participants with tools and support to stay strong, focused, confident and resilient in their prevention expedition. Through enhanced leadership skills, PLC prepares students to not only make positive changes, but to be proud advocates of those changes. For more information about this event please visit their website at: www. plcstl.org
If you are interested in sending your child to this event, Parkway’s coalition, Alliance for Healthy Communities, is sponsoring 10 students! It is on a first come first serve basis and is open to any middle school aged students. Please have your child contact Jason Crawford or Jessica Grooms (your school’s Safe and Drug-free Leaders) to sign up!
Connect 4 Mixer
We are excited to announce that Parkway’s Drug-free TVC (Teen Voice for Change) is hosting the Connect 4 Mixer series again for the third year! Our Back to School Beach Bash in September was a huge success and we are looking forward to our next mixer on Friday, December 15th, at Parkway North High School. All middle school age students are welcome to come join the fun, it starts at 7:00 and is a “lock-in” until 9:30pm. The cost is $10 with advanced registration or $15 at the door that night. Look for more information as it gets closer to the event.
Pack'n Now n L8r
The SADF facilitators have been visiting the middle schools this fall and sharing the Pack’n 4 Now n L8r lessons with the 8th grade classes. Pack’n 4 Now n L8r includes four lessons which focus on making good decisions and preparing the students for high school. During this program, students look at three aspects of their lives: academics, relationships and personal health. They realize the impact stress can have on them, the importance of being in healthy relationships and that choices they are making now will impact them later. Pack’n 4 Now n L8r allows students to identify what is “weighing them down” and equips them with management strategies.
New this year is a 2nd lesson taught by high school students. They will visit our 8th graders once in October or November and again in the spring for the final lesson. These lessons will allow the middle school students to make connections with high school students from their area and provide an opportunity for them to ask questions about their high school concerns. Our goal is to provide positive role models for the 8th graders as well as have informative conversations helping them with a smooth transition into high school.
