"Love First, Last, & Always"
We are nearly halfway through our school year and our students are making amazing gains! There have been successful days, challenging days, exciting days, exhausting days, and more! It has been busy and our kids have learned so much! We couldn’t be more proud!
We all want what is best for our kids. We want them to be happy and successful. But how do we define success? Have we ever stopped to consider success through God’s eyes?
God isn’t looking for the best reader or the brightest mathematician, the fastest hockey player or the most skilled pianist. While these achievements are valuable and important, what God wants is our hearts. He wants us to love Him and love others. That’s how God defines success.
Let’s consider bringing our definition of success for our children closer to God’s definition. Are our children kind? Do they care for others? Are the patient? Sincere? Helpful? Generous? Compassionate? God defines success in terms of love. Love is the bottom line
As we head into the second part of our school year, let’s keep encouraging our learners to work hard, be curious, and tackle their goals. But let’s also keep God’s definition of success in the forefront. Being loving is what truly matters.
“As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

UPDATE on the BLANKET EXERCISE
Dear Parents and staff:
Parents and staff of EICS students are invited to take part in a Blanket Exercise to be held at Central Learning Services (310 Broadview Road) in Sherwood Park on Thursday, January 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Please note that this is the updated date after the original date was changed due to the extreme cold on the 15th.
The Blanket Exercise is an active participation learning activity based on the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. For further information, please view this KAIROS Blanket Exercise video.
Participants are asked to bring a blanket that can be placed on the floor and stepped on for this activity.
Please RSVP by Monday, January 20 by filling out this linked Google Form: Blanket Exercise Rescheduled - January 23. If you can attend, please register using this link even if you had registered using the earlier link for January 15.
We will also have Eva Stang join us at this event. Eva, a Métis Culture and Knowledge Keeper, has been working with EICS this year, supporting the continued growth in staff and administrator knowledge of Indigenous perspectives.
Although there are versions of this activity that are appropriate for young children, the version we will be using is geared more toward older youth and adults.
If you have any questions, please email Crystal Cholin, Learning Services Consultant (crystalc@eics.ab.ca).
EICS Board Highlights
Try Math talk with your child. It is simply talking to your child about the math that they experience.
Doubles/Near Doubles:
Strategy Explained: 6 + 7 When using doubles or near doubles, the child uses the recall of their doubles facts to help them efficiently add. Example “I know 6 plus 6 is 12, so 6 + 7 is one more than that...13” 6 + 6 = 12 SO 6 + 6 + 1 = 13
