Planting for Impact
National Arbor Day is Friday, April 24, 2020. Florida's Arbor Day is a state celebration that is held the third Friday of January. Hilliard Middle-Senior High School's FFA and Ag Education students, led by Mrs. McCullough, celebrated the third Friday in January to work around Pine Tree Planting season.
Agriculture Education students at HMSHS get the opportunity to work hand in hand with Mr. Jim Tootle, our county forester in managing the Hilliard FFA Chapters 60 acre forest. The students worked with county foresters to plant over 2,000 pine trees in the FFA Forest. Students not only get to learn about reforestation with Rayonier, Westrock, and the Forestry Department, they get a multitude of opportunities to put their skills to the test. FFA Vice President Jennifer Martin says, "We aren't just planting trees, we are creating a sustainable economic opportunity for the next group of students coming in behind us". With Pine Trees being the number one crop in Northeast Florida its imperative students learn their economic impact and explore and experience career opportunities right here in our county.
