Summary ( Act 1, Scene 1, Lines 111-179 )
We begin the scene with Theseus ( the Duke of Athen) announcing that Lysander and Hermia shall not be together. He states that if she does not follow this command, she must marry Demetrius unless she wishes to be killed or a nun (1.i.111-126). Despite her fathers wishes, it doesn't stop Lysander and Hermias love for one another and loyalty towards one another. Lysander states , " The course of true love never did run smooth; But either it was different in blood-," (1.i.134-135). This show his faithfulness in his relationship. After a bit of discussion, they eventually decide to flee into the woods to be wed.
Hermia is the daughter of Egeus. In AMND, hernia is a caught in a predicament; her father wants her to be with Demetrius, but she has a fondness for Lysander. She is faced with the dilemma of listening to Egeus. If she does not listen to him, she will ether be sentenced to death or to be a nun.
Lysander is in love with Hermia. Although, Hermias father Egeus does not approve. He wants her to be with Demetrius. Since Egeus does not consent to their relationship, they both decide to run of to elope.
Theseus is the Duke of Athens. He has a position of power and dominance through the play. In Act 1, Scene 1, He is commanded by Egeus to denounce his veto of Lysanders and Hermias (his daughter) relationship.
Egeus is the father of Hermia, and try to keep her away from her love Lysander in the play AMND. He appears in Scene 1, Lines of 127. Egeus pleads to Theseus to demand that hernia not be with Lysander, but Demetrius. He commands that if she does not listen, she will ether be killed or be a nun.

- You will either be put to death or become a nun
- This is the most important quote because it is a turing point for the characters; from here on out it will be Lysander's and Hermia's main wish to run off to be together.
