From the Principal's Pen

September 28, 2018

Over the summer, a bottle filler water fountain was installed in the JC Cafe. Since the beginning of the school year, we have saved the waste from over 1,000 plastic water bottles by using our new bottle filler! Mrs. Brush has been tweeting out about our progress each week. Follow her on Twitter at @jcasstprincipal to keep track with us!

Welcome Back, Ms. Nagy!

Ms. Karen Nagy is much improved and will be returning to Julian Curtiss on Monday, October 1st. In order to provide the students with a smooth transition, Ms. Thoden and Ms. Nagy will teach in the third grade classroom together for the week of October 1st.

We welcome Ms. Nagy back to her classroom and thank Ms. Thoden for a productive beginning to the school year.

Kindergarten Spotlight

Are you considering your Kindergarten options for school year 2019-2020? SAVE THE DATE for Greenwich Public Schools Kindergarten Spotlight on November 13, 2018, 6:00 p.m. at the Town Hall Meeting Room to learn more about the GPS Kindergarten program.

This past Wednesday, all teachers of math at Julian Curtiss participated in a workshop with Greg Tang, renowned math expert. Greg Tang is the NY Times best-selling author of eight math picture books from Scholastic. His books are also available as Storia eBooks, and have been translated into Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, Turkish and Hebrew. More than 1 million books have been sold worldwide.

As part of our work this year, teachers will be exploring how place value and number sense are addressed across the grade levels. Having a firm understanding of place value and number sense provides a solid foundation for students as they approach counting and one-to-one correspondence in kindergarten, move into addition and subtraction in 1st and 2nd grades, and especially for work with multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals as they move up in the higher grade levels. Our teachers are working together as a team to develop a solid understanding of the progression of skills from kindergarten to 5th grade so they can best address the needs of all of our learners.

On that note, parents will have an opportunity to hear Greg Tang speak on Tuesday, October 16th at 6:30 pm at North Mianus School. His workshops have been very well-received by parents across the district, and this is an excellent opportunity to learn what your children are doing in math, and how to help them at home.
