Te Karere a te Tumuaki - Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou. Happy new year! Gosh - so many people to thank. We had an awesome turnout this morning for our Matariki breakfast. Not only was the turnout fabulous but we had a really clear, perfect morning for stargazing. A huge thanks to everyone for coming along and being part of our celebration. The atmosphere around the fire pit was fun - we enjoyed eating the products of the cooking during the day.
Thanks to PAK'n SAVE Masterton for donating the bread, Belle Fresca for donating bananas, kumara and potatoes for our fire pit and to @Northfuels for providing the BBQ trailer. Huge thanks to Ra Smith and star expert Becky for talking to us about Matariki and showing us how to find the cluster in the sky.
Great job and thank you to all of the parents who helped out with the cooking of the kai and to Cabernet Meats for processing the meat at no cost - you are all awesome!
Mid-year reports are coming home on Wednesday next week. Please look out for them in your childrens' school bags.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Belinda Bunny
Assembly
Well done to Jake Homes and Bella Tosswill for running a super assembly this week. Congratulations to all of you who received certificates today - our focus this week was Manaakitanga. We had so many stars during the week that we couldn't possibly narrow it down to 1, 2 or even a few. Thanks to all of our tamariki for happily helping set up tables, lights, fire-pits, unload trees, make soup, ice donuts, take lunch orders - the list goes on.
Farewell to the Browns
Monday will be Blake and Scarlett's last day at Gladstone School. The Browns are moving to Timaru and we wish them all the best for their new adventure. We are certainly going to miss all of you and thank you for your generous support of the school over many years. We would love to hear how you're getting on so when you're settled in, drop us a line.

Happy Birthday
Kia Ora Mrs Church
It was fabulous to hear that Mrs Church video-called Kourarau this morning. She is currently in Miami visiting family. Scarlett enjoyed saying goodbye to Jaime. We have Mrs Barton (Lizzie) covering for Jaime while she is away.
Footsteps - Whānau Viewing Opportunity
On Tuesday (6th July) we have our final footsteps session. This will double as an opportunity for whānau to come along and see what tamariki have been learning. Session times are as follows: Ruamahanga (Y4-6) 11:45; Kourarau (Y1-3) 1:30pm; Onoke (Y7-8) 2:00pm. The sessions are being run in the school hall. Check out the video below for a taster.
Scooter Rules - Thanks to the boys for putting this cool rules reminder together.
The Gladstone Project and Wairarapa Winter Jackets
Winter has finally arrived, and with the colder weather upon us our thoughts are with those who may be struggling to keep their families warm this winter. With this in mind, The Gladstone Project is supporting Wairarapa Winter Jackets - an incredible initiative that takes donations of jackets and warm winter clothing and gives it directly to those in need.
If you have any spare clean jackets, jumpers, merinos or thermals in good condition, please pop them down to the Gladstone School office - we will be collecting for the month of July, and will pass them on to the Wairarapa Winter Jackets team to redistribute.
Conversely, if you need warm jackets or clothing for your family, please get in touch with the team via their Facebook page facebook.com/wairarapawinterjackets. Let them know the ages/sizes you need and they’ll sort you out, no questions asked!
After School Art Classes
We are currently exploring the possibility of after school art classes for students in the Gladstone area. The classes would be held in the Gibson Hall at Gladstone School, from 3:30-4:30pm. The available days are Monday to Thursday, but probably only 2 of those days, depending on interest. It would be $20 per class, with all materials supplied.
The teacher is Elissa Smith – who has 30 years' experience as a primary school teacher specialising in art, and has a Diploma in Art and Creativity (with Honours). She was leading private art classes in Wellington for the last 5 years or so, until her relocation to the Wairarapa 24 months ago, and is currently the president of the Art Club in Masterton.
Please contact gladstone.artclass@gmail.com to register your child’s interest – and please specify a preferred day or days. There will be a maximum of 8-10 people per class, and places will go to those who register first.
We are hoping to start classes in the first week of Term 3.
Gladstone School Winter Hoodie Order
We are opening up another order for anyone who missed the first round. Orders close on Friday the 9th of July (last day of term 2). Please use the button below to complete the online order form.
Planting Day - Sunday 4th July
It would be fantastic to have as many of you as possible helping out at our upcoming planting day. We have recently received grants from the 'Ruamahanga Restoration Project', 'Countdown Supermarket' and the Greater Wellington Regional Council. A total of $5,000 worth of plants are due to be put in the ground so it's all hands on deck. We have also ordered some high quality weed matting.
Please bring along any and al of the following items to use if you can: weed eaters; spades; wheel barrows; rakes. If anyone has a little digger to scrape away grass/top soil for some pathways in the orchard area too, that would be amazing. FoGS is sorting lunch for everyone - please RSVP below if you think you can make it.
FoGS Monday School Lunch Roster
Thanks to everyone who is able to help out with our Monday school lunches. Please see this terms roster on the left. FoGS is a lovely bunch of dedicated parents who are looking for new recruits to help organise events throughout the year. Please feel welcome and encouraged to come along to our next meeting and get involved.
