Message from Mrs. Hafey
Each day we ask our students to take risks, learn new content, and think outside the box......Please read through this weekly newsletter carefully as there is a lot to ponder, try, and yes I am asking YOU all to step outside of your comfort zone!
As I am able to hobble into classrooms - I am seeing 1 common theme that is missing! I see love, compassion, well planned out lessons, I see evidence of collaboration - however, the one thing I am missing in my observations are times that teachers are OFF LIMITS.... Many times, most times - staff is being observed as giving too much instead of leading and allowing productive struggle. I hear teachers repeating directions/expectations multiple times - allowing students to check out.....
Mary shared with me after visiting many classes - the main trend she to observed was giving our students too much , not allowing them to struggle/discover. She observed teachers jumping in to save a student much too soon.
So, with that observation - my challenge to ALL of you is to devise an indicator that shows your students you are OFF LIMITS (a lay, a hat, a sweater....) - something - and when I make my rounds this upcoming week - if I am able to identify it - a little something will be left for you!
If you have questions, please let me know....

End of Year - Next Year Information
**Desktop computers in the classrooms will continue to disappear - it is possible that each classroom may loose 1-2 classroom desktops next year
**Spending - needs to be completed - if your budget allows it - by March 13.
Challenge that begins Now - till Spring Break....
I want ALL teachers - yes PLTW, SPED, Music, PE.....to tape record an explicit instruction part of a lesson - any lesson (15 min. tops). Then, within 24 hours of this recording I want YOU to listen and collect all the questions you ask - you may have to listen a time or five to collect all the questions.
Once these questions are collected - I want you to compare your level of questions to the level of questioning - are your questions high enough?
Higher-order questions are those that the students cannot answer just by simple recollection or by reading the information “verbatim” from the text. Higher-order questions put advanced cognitive demand on students. They encourage students to think beyond literal questions.
As you are planning deeply - I'd like to see a focus on the level of questions you are choosing to use? Are you constantly using Level 1/2 or Level 4/5?

5. Change Your Lenses - Video #4:
In the fourth video segment, you'll learn that challenging behavior occurs when the demands of the environment exceed a kid’s capacity to respond adaptively. In other words, it takes two to tango. But many popular explanations for challenging behavior place blame on the kid or his parents.
