From the Principal:
Welcome to a new calendar year!
I am very excited to share news about the coming year with you! 2016 marks the beginning of some significant and long needed improvements to C.L. Smith. Thanks to the approval of Measure D funds last Spring, Smith is going to be getting several million dollars of improvements over the next two years. Right now the projects are in the early planning stage, with preliminary plans being drafted. In the coming months teams of teachers, support staff and parent groups along with architects and district facilities staff will be meeting to gather input on plans and proposed renovations.
The first big project to be completed is the installation of new playground equipment in our Kindergarten play ground. This project actually started last spring, when the two dangerous play structures were removed from the kinder yard. This fall, the kinder and TK teachers along with parent representative, Courtney Kienow met to come up with a plan for the new play structure that was installed over Winter Break. We are very fortunate to have a large kinder yard and have been able to install the largest kinder play structure in the district. It is truly amazing and will greatly benefit the physical development of our kindergarten and TK students. We will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new structure on Wednesday, January 6 at 8:30 in the kinder yard (rain cancels). Please join us!
Other improvements the will be happening at Smith in the next two years include:
As you know from our discussions, the district is focused on making CL Smith one of our key sites to get completed first. We are currently working on the following projects:
- New 6th grade furniture (January 2016)
- Paint entire campus (Summer 2016)
- Stucco/upgrade exterior walls (Summer 2016)
- Update 1st grade restroom (Summer 2016)
- New full-size kinder classroom with bathroom to replace room 20 (Summer 2016)
These projects will likely start during the 2016-2017 School year
- New front office
- New landscapes front of campus with bus turn out
- New campus fencing- safety
- New fire alarm
- New intercom/phone/clock system
- New furniture
With any construction project there can be unforeseen delays and inconveniences, but ultimately these improvements will greatly enhance our school. should you have any questions or concerns. I will keep you informed of our progress over the coming months.
Take care,
Joyce Hansen
Principal

PTA NEWS
Happy New Year CL Smith Families and welcome back! This time of year marks the heaviest fundraising campaign for the PTA as we get start planning and gathering items for our annual Live/Silent Auction. We can’t do this event without you! If you are willing to lend us a hand soliciting items (we have a list of businesses), or planning the event, please contact Heather Diesta: chrisheather.slo@gmail.com.
Our first PTA MEETING of the calendar year is TUESDAY, JANUARY 5TH, 2016 AT 6PM IN THE STAFF LOUNGE. We will be getting our Auction planning underway so please make plans to attend! As always, children are welcome with a quiet activity and an interpreter will be provided.
We have a few classrooms that are lacking a Room Rep, or Room Parent. The role of the Room Rep is to act as a liason between the teacher and PTA. It really is a great way to connect with your child’s teacher, as well as PTA! If you feel like you can fulfill this role in the following classrooms, please contact Hallie Fraysier and fraysier5@charter.net:
Miss Emrick, TK
Mrs. Sill, Kindergarten
Mrs. Pearse, Kindergarten
Mr. Garner, 4th Grade
