Sustainability Program "Meeting Space"
In an effort to create a collaborative space for all of you to share information with each other, we have created a Google Drive file called Sustainability Program. In it, you will find:
- Open Discussions - This is our meeting space! We want all of you to post your questions, concerns, problems, and solutions in here so that we can learn from each other. There are so many amazing initiatives all around the district, and it will be great to be able to reach out to one another!
- Eco-Schools - Here is some information on their auditing process.
- Elementary Schools, High Schools, and Middle Schools - You will find your school name in each of these files. These are meant for you to share photos (make sure you have media releases from all students!), success stories, data, project outlines, anything you want us and other schools to know about your programs.
- Incentive Program FY 14-15 - This is everything you need to know about this year's Energy, Waste and Consumption, and Behavioral Incentive Program. Be sure to register every year in order to participate.
- Sustainability Updates - This is where the District Sustainability Team will share updates with you and file our newsletters.
We hope you are excited as we are to connect, share best practices, and solve our problems together!
Red Apple Recycling
There is no cost to participate, they provide the Little Red Schoolhouse, and they pick up the used clothing, shoes, and household textiles. Start your own Clothing Drive Challenge this spring!
TerraCycle
You can sign up for one of 40 Brigade Programs spanning food packaging (like drink pouches and candy wrappers) to office supplies (like pens and tape dispensers) to personal products (like cosmetic, beauty, and diaper packaging). Once you join, you can send your waste to TerraCycle and get credited for a payment of $0.01 per point to the non-profit or school of your choice. This is a free service, just box it up, print the label, and send it off.
So, get recycling and earn some funds for your school!
Crayola ColorCycle
Participating in ColorCycle with your school is as easy as 1-2-3-4!
1. Engage & Educate
Inform your school administrators or PTO/PTA about participating in the ColorCycle program.
2. Collect & Count
Set up a collection station in your school for used markers. Crayola ColorCycle will accept all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers. That includes dry erase markers and highlighters! Count up all the markers.
3. Pack & Print
Pack markers in a cardboard box (with minimal outer markings). Print out a shipping label.
4. Ship & Smile
FedEx Ground will pick up the markers — Crayola pays all shipping charges! Finally, smile - you just saved the planet!
Green Education Foundation Green Week
National Green Week is an annual event that empowers schools to engage in sustainability focused lessons, projects or activities between the first full week in February and the end of Earth Month (April). Participating districts, schools, classrooms or youth groups choose a week, then select from GEF's sustainability focused programs to be their ‘green theme.’ Each theme provides 5 day standards-based lesson sets, activities, recommended reading, sustainability tips, contests, and more! Join over 10,000 schools and 5 million students in the largest sustainability education program running!
About National Green Week 2015
National Green Week 2015 kicked off February 2 and runs until May 2, 2015. You choose any week until during this timeframe to be your Green Week. Participate for the whole week, a day, or just one lesson, reading or activity. Schools and groups are encouraged to take this opportunity to spend time with students discussing sustainability topics and exploring ways they can make a difference.
It's easy, just follow these simple steps to start your program today!
- Become a GEF member here
- Pick any week between Feb 2 and May 2, 2015 to be your Green Week
- Select a sustainability themed program here and integrate grade specific lessons, activities and readings (located on the left menu of each theme) into your class during your chosen Green Week
- Complete this survey at the end of your Green Week (and be entered to win a $100 Amex gift card)
