Sewing Machines

Self Tailored Clothes Made Easy!

Who, When, and Why

Elias Howe moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1838 to be apprenticed along with his cousin to be a mechanic with carding machinery. Howe got his idea to invent the sewing machine from his employer, Ari Davis. Howe patented his sewing machine with a lockstitch design on September 10, 1846.

Much of womens' time was devoted to making clothing handmade with needles and thimbles. With the sewing machine taking hours off of the time it took to make clothing women had more time for leisure and other employment.
