Savvy Students
Norwood Newsletter
Makerspaces
A library makerspace, is an area in the library where students can gather to make and create. This month I added a makerspace at Norwood with books on robots and inventions and a tub of toys called Toobers and Zots donated by Little Kids Inc. The students have had a great time creating some unique inventions.
Inventions
From Bread Cutters that cut the whole loaf at once, to special Translating Dog Collars that let you hear what your dog is actually saying, the students have come up with some terrific inventions!
Robots on Display
Some great new books were added to the library display and were used during our read out loud time for first and second grade; Boy + Bot, Spare Parts, The Most Magnificent Thing, Rosie Revere Engineer, and A Wizard from the Start.
Gadget Maker
Students also visited the website Dumonde's Gadget Maker where they could create a gadget, add music, type in a name and add a description. Smiles all around!
We Voted!
After reading at least three of the 20 nominated RICBA titles, Norwood students in grades 4-6 voted. The graphic novel, El Deafo by Cece Bell was first. A tie for second was between the two nonfiction books, Mr. Ferris and His Wheel and Joltin' Joe Dimaggio. Third place was a biography about Carl Sagan, Star Stuff by Stephanie Sisson. Now we wait for the rest of the state to vote to determine the overall winner. All individual votes counted and were submitted to the state.
Home Connection
Students will begin taking PARCC tests soon. If you are curious about the test or want to help your child prepare, here is a link to the library website page that has many examples and tools that can help.
