Note from the Principal-Cathy Jacobs
We are excited about our Day of Awesomeness this Thursday! We are still in need of volunteers, the only thing you have to do is stand by a portion of the inflatable obstacle course and monitor the students entering and exiting-very easy! Please see the link below to sign up to volunteer! Thank you!
In honor of Veteran’s Day on Monday, November 11th we are going to hang a display on the windows of the Library of all the veterans we know to show our appreciation. Please fill out the star paper attached below (a hard copy came home last Friday) with information about the veteran you know and a picture (a copy of a picture or one your child draws is fine) and we will display them for the month of November. You may send more than one if you choose.
In addition, we will also have a special Veteran's Day Gathering on Monday, November 11th from 2:45-3:30 here at Matzke. Students may invite a Veteran that is special to them. We will have a small choir sing a few songs, we will serve light refreshments and recognize our Veterans in attendance. Students who have a guest will leave class to attend, all other students will remain in class. Families of the student and Veteran are welcome to attend. We will need RSVPs for that day and information about the Veteran attending. Please fill out the electronic form below by Friday, November 1st.

Low Down from our Librarian Katie Abbott / De Parte de la Bibliotecaria
No Internet? No Problem!
Did you know that our district offers Kajeet Wifi Hotspot Devices? If your student is needing internet to work on projects, access district/campus online resources, or work on iStation, they may check out a hotspot and Chromebook from the library! Students may check them out at the end of the day and return them first thing in the morning. They must know their student email and password to log onto the Chromebooks. If you would like your child to be able to check one out, please fill out the attached Parent Permission form and Student Accountability Agreement and return it to the library. Email katherine.abbott@cfisd.net if you have any questions!
Bite Size Behavior Tips from our Behavior Interventionist, Tracy Klare
Technology and the Elementary Student
It is very clear to see that technology use is here to stay, but do we truly understand the effects of technology on a developing brain? A child's brain is very malleable, or impressionable, and technology has a large part to play in the development of today's child. Research shows that frequent and sustained use of technology harms attention span, reduces self-soothing and self-regulation, increases physical aggression, stalls physical activity, hurts school performance, limits face to face interactions, and affects emotional development. Elementary schools across the nation are seeing more and more students who have trouble completing tasks in class, calming themselves in a difficult situation, and showing empathy for others. Although technology can aid in spatial relations, multi-tasking, and learning, finding a good balance between technology, family time, and outside time is key. Make sure your child can hold a 5-10 minute conversation with you about their day, play outside when the sun is out and the weather is nice, and add in a fun game or two on some sort of device...you run the technology, don't let the technology run you.
Instructional Information from our Instructional Specialists!
Joke of the week:
Q: What did the paper say to the pencil?
A: You have a good point!
Math Tip: Skip counting is a great way to build numeracy. Practice skip counting with your child by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. This is a good jump start into multiplication for the upper grades.
Reading/ Writing Tip: Choose your favorite fiction and nonfiction book. Discuss with your child why we read them for different purposes.
