What's coming up next week:
In reading, we will be fine-tuning our reading strategies. Lessons next week will focus on:
- taking a guess and "driving" on
- asking the questions: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
Sometimes, students can get so stuck on a tricky word that they become frustrated and lose all the meaning for what they've already read. Teaching them to take a guess and drive on allows them to finish the sentence or the page, and then allows them to go back and figure out that tricky word.
In word work, we will be learning the new words new, good, & his. We will continue to practice word families with the ending sounds -ew, -ood, -at, -et, and -ot.
In writing, students will be researching animals and writing informational pieces about animal characteristics. We will be learning about different kinds of animal feet, how animals are born (hatch or live birth), how animals communicate with other animals.
In math, kindergarteners will continue their measurement unit. Our focus next week is to compare objects by length. Students will also be practicing addition and subtraction facts. Please help your child with any addition and subtraction facts to 5 that they do not know. For example, 2+3=5, 1+4=5, 1+2=3, or 4-2=2, 5-1=4.
In social studies, we will be learning about classifying animals. Students will study types of animals, how animals are born, animal coverings, and how animals protect themselves from predators.
