COVID-19 Update
As of January 11, 2022
Niagara County Department of Health (NCDOH) School Updates
Isolation and Quarantine
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for five (5) days (regardless of vaccination status), where Day 0 is the day of symptom onset or (if asymptomatic) the day of collection of the first positive specimen.
If asymptomatic at the end of five (5) days or if symptoms are resolving, individuals may return to school on Day 6.
Individuals who are exposed to a COVID-19 individual (in the school or outside of the school setting) either:
If fully vaccinated (regardless of booster status) no quarantine is required to participate in school during the regular day.
If not fully vaccinated, may quarantine for five (5) days (where Day 0 is considered the last day of exposure) OR, may continue to report to work or school if participating in a Test-To-Stay (TTS) program. TTS is being reviewed in Niagara County and details will be released when TTS is adopted. TTS includes the following:
Test at school through the school nurse or at home, on the day of the exposure and on Day 5 following the exposure. The exposed person is tested a minimum of two times during the five-day period following exposure, unless recognition of the exposure is delayed or weekends or school breaks intervene. In all cases testing should occur before the school day begins on the day reporting to school. During this period of time the individual can stay in the school setting. If symptoms appear during this period, quarantine and seek testing.
Individuals 12 years or older (students and staff) who are eligible for a booster and who are not boosted and who have been exposed to an individual with COVID-19 cannot participate in extracurricular activities during the five (5) days following an exposure to a COVID-19 individual.
Contact Tracing
Local health departments are no longer obligated to contact contract tracing and have shifted to an abbreviated case notification. Niagara County Department of Health will continue to conduct contact tracing as resources permit and will focus on individuals 0- 18 years of age, school staff, and seniors.
Contact tracing conducted by schools may soon be eliminated.
Release from Isolation
Effective immediately, NCDOH will NOT be calling positive cases to release them from isolation. All individuals will be directed to the NCDOH website for a self-serve affirmation of isolation. This form should be submitted to the school nurse.
Testing
Testing Requirements: NCDOH will permit the use of At-Home (Self-Test, OTC, etc.) test kits when testing allows a rapid antigen test.
Therefore, At-Home test kits may be used for testing of symptomatic persons (with no known exposure) to return to school/work.
NCDOH recommends that individuals with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or with known exposure who are NEGATIVE with a home-test seek confirmatory testing through a certified testing source. Aveanna School testing is an appropriate referral in these cases.
NCDOH will continue to accept POSITIVE at-home test results through their web page reporting form. NCDOH will not accept NEGATIVE results.
Aveanna School Testing
Only POSITIVE results are communicated to the client.
This testing is not intended for the general public to use. Aveanna may require that school ID or other proof of attendance at a Niagara County school be presented.
Students/families are directed to utilize the online registration system.
Vaccine Eligibility
Effective January 5, 2022 all individuals 12 years of age and older are eligible for a booster five (5) months after completion of the primary series.
Information has been updated on the NCDOH website and the registration system has been updated to reflect this change.
