The Fuss over Fidgets
The use of fidgets is not new. Individuals have carried worry stones in pockets and handled necklace beads for years. People have clicked pens, chewed fingernails, and tapped feet as a means of reducing stress or improving focus. Middle school students have handled stress balls and other small items during anxious moments like tests. So why are fidgets such a big deal now?
In the past two weeks, SMS has been overrun with fidget items such as spinners and cubes. While we want students to be successful, we also want to reduce distractions in the classroom. The sheer volume of fidget items has created more distraction than focus! Most are being used as toys, instead of their intended purpose.
SMS fidget rules are simple.
- Out of sight. Your peers should not be distracted by your use of a fidget.
- Focus on learning, not the fidget. You should not be looking at your fidget when you should be looking at the teacher or completing work.
- Your fidget is YOUR fidget. No one should possess your fidget but you.
Staff members will confiscate a fidget from any student violating one of the rules.
If you want to use a fidget, see Miss Nass. About 30 students have done so already. Make an appointment if you want to use a fidget in class and staff will be notified of all with permission.
ISTEP+ Part 2: Almost Done!
Good luck on your remaining exams.
SCHEDULE
Tue. April 25- Math 3 8:45-10 AM
Wed. April 26- 6 Science 1 and 2 & 7 SS 1 and 2 8:45-11 AM
The Department of Education plans to release parent codes in June. A parent code will allow a parent the opportunity to log in and see some of their child's applied skills answers. Schools will receive results later in the summer. We'll share info as we have it!
Rule Reminders
- Wear long shorts. Shorts (and skirts) must extend at least to fingertip length of the wearer. You might have grown over the winter and things that were legal last fall may not meet code this spring. Make sure your shorts aren't too short with the simple fingertip test.
- Protect your iPad screen. We've had a minor spike in broken screens due to carelessness. Use your cover when you are mobile and don't drop your device!
- Skip horseplay. Surprise shoving, racing, and smacking between friends often leads to injury and hard feelings. Under no circumstances should students hit each other in the privates. The 'game' of hitting male privates is disrespectful, unhealthy, and considered sexual harassment. Dude. Be Nice. Don't put your hands on each other!

iPad Update
If your iPad is on iOS 10.2.1, it's time to update to 10.3.1. To find out what version of iOS you have go to Settings>General>About and look for the version number.
Please do not attempt to update your iPad on the morning of ISTEP+ testing or during a class. IF you have any difficulty, visit the media center for assistance! Thanks!
