SNOW DAY!
We hope you all enjoyed some fun, safe time in the snow on Tuesday. Here are some pictures from our day-after play session with our buddy class!
Math Workshop
This week, the Maples practiced creating number sentences by experimenting with the rekenrek. For the first time, we formally introduced + and = symbols, explaining what they mean in terms of composing and decomposing numbers and amounts.
Reading Workshop
Book Wonderings...
This week, Reading Workshop was all about looking closely and asking yourself questions. We remembered back to the beginning of the year when we took our walk to read signs around our school and neighborhood, and thought of all the things we noticed: words! letters! shapes! colors! The Maples then brought this skill back and practiced with their books during independent reading. With partners, they created book wonderings. A book wondering starts with:
- I wonder why...
- How does ...
- What is this?
Writing Workshop
This week, we focused on the concept of rereading your own work. As we explained to the Maples, a story isn't a story unless you can share it with someone! Reading your own writing can be a challenging thing for a kindergartener. We made a list of all of the places in our room that can help us when we get stuck spelling our sounding out a word. This week, every Morning Message at Morning Meeting required the Maples to stretch spell or book spell a word. During Writing Workshop, they practiced writing about the members of their families, using our Word Wall as a helpful hint. We then returned to the rug and shared our work with a partner.

Home Visits!
Thank you to our hosts! The Maples travelled to three home visits this week. We did observational drawing, learned what it means to have a roommate, and went on a scavenger hunt to find old family photographs.
