Welcome to 1B Classroom

August 31, 2018

Hello 1B Families

Welcome to 1B everyone! First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. We are looking forward to a very exciting and productive year working with your child and will strive each day to make learning a fun and enriching process. However, we need your help in making this year as successful as possible! We believe that teachers and parents are a team working together to help your child develop emotionally and academically. You are the most important person in your child’s life, and you are also a teacher in your child’s life.

Teacher Intro: Angela Park

I am very excited to start my fifth year here at Brooklyn Prospect...wow time flies! As some of you may know, I taught Kindergarten at BPCS for the past four years and enjoyed building strong relationships with many students, as well as amazing families. Originally from Queens, I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Stony Brook University. After realizing my true passion for teaching, I went on to pursue a dual Masters degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education with a Bilingual Extension in Korean at Teachers College Columbia University. Prior to BPCS, I have experience with a wide age range of students, starting from being the head teacher of a toddler class to teaching SAT English and private tutoring high school students. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring museums and cute cafes, researching skin care and beauty products, solving Sudoku problems, and spending quality time with family and loved ones.

Teacher Intro: Jessica Perez

Hi Parents! My name is Jessica Perez and I am the new teacher in 1B. I got the chance to meet some parents at pick up but not all so I'd like to take a moment to tell you a little bit about myself. Prior to coming to BPCS, I was working as a head teacher in a 3's and 4's Pre-K classroom in DUMBO for the past 7 years. I graduated from Brooklyn College last year with a degree in Early Childhood Education. During my free time, I like to travel, explore new restaurants, and watching movies. I am more than thrilled to get to know your children and be given this opportunity to teach them this year. Look forward to formally meeting everyone soon!

First Grade Questionnaire

We are so excited to begin this year of learning and growth with you and your child. As we begin our time together, we would like to learn about your child’s interests and unique personalities. Please write us a brief email about your child. We will forward your response to your child’s new teacher should he/she switch classes. We have included the following questions for your consideration:

  • What does your child love? Please tell us what your child is passionate about or share a topic on which he or she is an expert.

  • What are your hopes for your child this year?

  • As a family member, what supports do you need? How can we work as a team to create the best school experience for your child?

  • Is there anything else that you would like us to know about your child?

Our classroom email is dtes1b@brooklynprospect.org. Please send this information on or before September 14, 2018.

Also, please note that as a team, we are getting to know your children as individuals and as a classroom community. Mr. Saunders reserves the right to switch a student's classroom based on student's needs and the needs of the classroom as a whole. We can’t wait to meet you and your child!

First Grade Birthday Celebration Policy

Starting in First Grade, students celebrate their birthdays as a collective group. To do this, we will have a once-a-month classroom celebration for ALL students with a birthday occurring in that month. Besides promoting the idea of community, we feel that this will allow us to meet and better manage the diverse dietary needs, schedules, and cultural backgrounds of our school families. We, of course, will still recognize your child’s birthday on his or her special day.

This monthly birthday celebration will take place on the last Friday of every month. The celebration will usually occur during lunch time from 12:20-12:55 pm; however, we will email to inform you if there is a change. We will reach out to you with an invitation and ask if you will be bringing any food items. Families are welcome to bring in treats. While sweets are allowed, we encourage the size of them to be kept small and also encourage healthy snacks, such as pre-washed fruit or fruit snacks. If you do bring in sweets, mini cupcakes are a great option as well as cookies (one per student). We have 30 students in our class. Other items, such as goodie bags or balloons, are not allowed. Please reach out via email if you have any questions or concerns about the First Grade birthday policy.

Food Allergies

As a reminder, our school follows a nut-awareness policy. If your child has any food allergies, please be sure to fill out the necessary forms in order to inform the school so that we can ensure a safe and healthy school environment for all children. If you have any further questions, please email Avery at escoordinator@brooklynprospect.org.
