Jan/Feb LMC Updates 2023
A message from the LMC Staff
Did you know?
We study 3 of these awards in LMC class: Newbery, Caldecott and Printz. Ask your student about these awards! They typically span from children's picture books to young adult books. The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. While the Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. And the Printz Award is awarded for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.
In our school libraries, these books are also marked with a sticker of their winning medal on the spine of the book so students can easily identify them.
World Read Aloud Day
ECSD K-5 students will listen to their Principal read aloud the book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World by Malcolm Mitchell, over the announcements. While listening, their classroom teacher will show slides of the pictures of this book so the entire school can read aloud together!
Take time to read aloud with your student(s) this month. Comprehension, vocabulary and strengthening relationships, are some of the many benefits of reading aloud. Learn more about the benefits of reading aloud here.
Battle of the Books
In teams of 4-5 students read 20 books and answer trivia questions about the plot, characters, and settings of the books. Students have also created book trailers for the books they've read and meet every week to discuss their books with their teammates. The Final Battle takes place online in February. The highest-scoring team at each school will go on to compete against other teams across the state.
2,450 books have been checked out this month! Most popular titles:

Book Fairs are coming soon!
TRIS & Levi Leonard Book Fairs will be open February 3-10. They will both be open until 8:00pm on February 7 & 9 during conferences at Levi Leonard.
The JC McKenna Book Fair will be open Feb 23-Mar 3.
Books can be purchased in person with cash, check, e-wallet or online. E-wallet is an option for families to set up a digital account for their student. Money is put on the e-wallet through the online store and the student pays at the book fair using their e-wallet account, no money or check in hand is needed. Please keep in mind e-wallet is attached to the school, so be mindful of which school's online store is being accessed when setting it up.
