Welcome Back, Again!

We had an exciting week this week with the addition of 4th and 5th grade students. Overall, the week went rather smoothly given the weather.

Please help me in congratulating the following students for being the winners of a Walmart gift card for their participation in Virtual Family Reading NIght!

E. Ellis: 2nd grade

I. Cunningham: 5th grade

D. Henry: 1st grade

E. Samuels: 4th grade. Thank you to all who participated in this Title I Family event!

I have had some of you reach out to me to share your concerns about "snow days" being asynchronous; I appreciate you reaching out. Please remember that students are required by law to attend school 180 days each year. By having students complete asynchronous work on these snow days, we will not need to add additional days to the calendar in June to meet this requirement; how many of us remember those years when we had to add a full week at the end of the year and take away spring break? This will avoid those changes to the school calendar. Please be reminded that all asynchronous work is given three school days before it is due; this means that you have additional time to work with your child if he/she cannot complete it during the regular school day. Keep in mind that having students turn in work is how we are able to count them as attending.

Please drop off all car riders at the Kindergarten entrance off Lupine Lane. Car riders enter the building at 8:45 AM for grades 1, 2, 4 and 5, and 10:00 AM for PreK, K and 3rd grade. Once buses begin to arrive, do not enter the bus loop; use the outer parking lot and walk to the school. The front bus loop is off limits from 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM, 9:45 AM - 10:15 AM, 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM, and 3:40 PM - 3:55 PM. I appreciate you working with us to keep our Dolphins safe!

If you are not receiving phone calls or emails, please reach out to the office with your most updated information. This way we can change it in the system.

Thank you for your continued support of Denton Elementary School! Stay safe during this interesting weather pattern we are experiencing!

Blessings to you and your family,

Susan R. McCandless

5th Grade Parent Nights

Are you curious about the transition to middle school? Has your 5th grader transformed into a different person? Are you interested in learning more about the new health curriculum and the other curricula used in 5th grade? Would you like to help plan some kind of special event for our 5th grade Dolphins? If any of these describe you, please plan to join us for monthly meetings to discuss this important time of transition for you and your child.

This year, DES is continuing to support parents and students with the transition to middle school by hosting a series of 5th Grade Parent Nights. On these nights, we will discuss transition in all forms: physical; mental; social media; and emotional (both parents and children!).

Our 5th Grade Parent Nights are tentatively scheduled monthly and for now will be held via Zoom beginning at 6:30 PM. I hope you will join us for all or any of these nights as the topics shared will be dictated by those who attend. Here are the dates planned but are subject to change:

• February 25: 6:30 PM Topic: Family Life Unit in Health

• March 25: 6:30 PM

• April 22: 6:30 PM

• May 27: 6:30 PM

• June 3: 6:30 PM

• June 16: 5th Grade Celebration (?)

I hope you will join us for one or all of these informative nights! Please email me for the Zoom link.
