COVID-19 Update

With the increasing spread of COVID-19, the Ontario Cycling Association continues to be fully supportive of the recommendations made by Cycling Canada.

After speaking with the organizers of upcoming events it has been decided that ALL events in the immediate future will be cancelled/postponed. This will be revisited biweekly and we will communicate further as we have new information from Health and Government Officials.

For up-to-date information regarding cycling events be sure to check our website and social media pages.

We are advising all clubs, teams, athletes and members to postpone or cancel any gatherings such as group rides and in-person group meetings for the immediate future. Effectively immediately any club/team activity will not be sanctioned or approved. This will be under on-going review and any changes will be communicated.

This is a rapidly evolving situation that has affected all sectors. We will continue to track the latest developments and meet with our partners to assess the situation and its impact. The health and safety of everyone involved in cycling is our main concern and we are taking all measures within our control.

We hope that everyone remains safe during this trying time and that we all follow the advice of Canadian Health Officials. With the closure of the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, our office will be closed to the public and we will be operating with reduced hours.

We will continue to update the situation when more details become available.

OCA Athletes Webinar Series

As athletes adjust to self-isolation and social distancing practices, the OCA will be hosting a number of webinars to help motivate, educate, and create a sense of community. The webinars are targeted towards developing athletes [ages 14 – 22]. However, athletes of all ages [and parents] are welcome to participate. We just ask that for workshops with interactive discussion/questions, that questions be limited to the target athlete group to ensure a focus on their needs.

The first session is scheduled for Monday March 23rd.

Track Season Wrap Up

The Track Provincial Championships have wrapped up and with them comes the end of the Provincial track season.

We would like to thank all of the officials, volunteers and commissaires whose tireless efforts and long hours made the events possible. They’re passion and commitment kept all events running smoothly, kept the races fair and ensured that all the riders were safe.

A special thank you also goes out to our announcer Chris Kiriakopoulos who brought energy and excitement to all of the events. We also want to thank all the coaches, parents and athletes who came out to our events this season.

The 2020 Youth Development Series Finale made adjustments to the format with the intention to place more emphasis on youth riders in the Learn to Train and Train to Train development stages. The Youth Events saw close to 100 participants. Those who came out to the Youth Development Finale received a free pizza party and some free swag.

There were three Ontario Cup Track Events which all saw over 100 participants with the third Ontario Cup event seeing the most at 191 participants. The Ontario Cup #3 took place in-conjunction with the Easter Challenge which included team sprint, team pursuit and for the first time the inclusion of the Madison into the Ontario Cup Series. Participants came from across Ontario as well as from New Brunswick, Quebec, the state of New York and the state of Pennsylvania.

This year at Provincials, the event took on an Omnium format in addition to the Sprint and IP events. It also saw two sets of medals awarded to categories when out-of-province residents occupied one or more of the top three positions in the race results. This involved an overall race podium which was subsequently followed up by the provincial podium for OCA members where the Provincial Champions were crowned.

There were over 200 participants at Provincials from across Ontario as well as five other provinces. Open to Americans, the event saw competitors come from eight states including the US Olympic Development Track Program. Overall the event saw over 80 competitors from out-of-province with 59 coming from the United States. The out-of-province participants definitely added an additional layer of challenge and competition to the races.

We want to thank everyone who came out to take part in the events throughout the season.
