An e-newsletter from North Merrick Schools: Fall 2018

Welcome to the 2018-19 School Year and the New Smore Template

Another exciting year of academic excellence is taking place in the North Merrick School District! Embedded within the new Blackboard Communications platform is the Smore e-newsletter template, which we will now use for our quarterly updates in A North Merrick Minute. Have a moment? Here's some highlights since September.

Parent University Helps Families "Fall" in Love With Math!

Math games and challenges competed for fun at the annual Parent University Family Math Night on October 23 at Harold D. Fayette School. There were so many activities to choose from monster measurement to the holiday cup tower challenger and counting spiders. In the Learning Edge Lab, families utilized Lego robotics to make their own inventions, and in the art room, they used green screen technology to take Halloween-themed photos! Coordinated by teachers Maria Castle and Lisa Drewes with activities supervised by North Merrick teachers, Family Math Night had families "falling in love" with math. New Approach to Literacy Instruction

The district has introduced Fountas & Pinnell Classroom to the lower grades as a cohesive, multi-text program for literacy instruction. The program is designed to support whole-group, small-group and independent learning opportunities. It includes interactive read-alouds, mini lessons, shared and guided reading, phonics and spelling, word study, book clubs, and independent reading collections. The program will help reinforce the reading and writing skills of our youngest students.

Hands-on Science Activities Promote Discovery Learning and Inquiry Science

Touch tanks, stream tables, bridges and structures, oh my! The North Merrick hands-on science curriculum across is in full motion across the grades. Second graders started off the year with their field trips to Jones Beach and Short Beach where they learned to use a seine net to collect samples, combed the beach using the Seashore Guide to record their observations, and explored tidal pools using small hand nets and pails. They brought back samples for their classroom touch tanks, where they will document their findings and create detailed diagrams.

Sixth Graders Utilize Chromebooks and Google Classroom to Engage in Interactive Lessons

Sixth grade teachers in North Merrick are transforming their classrooms through the use of Chromebooks and Google Classroom. Chromebooks are high-performance, low-cost devices that have innumerable applications in the instructional environment. Google Classroom is a free web-based platform for schools that connects teachers and students to communicate and collaborate. Using these digital tools together, our sixth graders are being well prepared for moving up to the secondary school level.
