Volume 2 March 2023- Setting the Standard in Education
The Great Aim of Education is... Action
Elementary Schools Science Family Nights
Excitement at the elementary schools as families, students, and teachers came together for an engaging Science family night. Students participated in make-and-take science activities in the makerspace classrooms. The school cafeterias turned into a big lab where everyone performed science experiments. Thank you to our makerspace teachers, campus administrators, students, and families for the fun and educational nights!

Keeping the Focus on Student Learning through the Plainview ISD Instructional Rounds
Plainview ISD Instructional Rounds
Since Fall 2022, PISD campus administrators, central office staff, and teachers continue to collaborate during the PISD Instructional Rounds process. Different networks of educators observe students in action in several classrooms in response to a practice they want to improve. The teams analyze data collected in classrooms observation, provide recommendations to continue improving, and find supports on that area for continuous improvement. In PISD, we learn to do the work by doing the work. We all learn together and grow together.
Increasing Student Academic Talk and Depth of Knowledge
Increasing Student Academic Talk and Rigorous Instruction for All Students District Wide
Research is very clear, he/she who does the talk does the learning. The PISD Instructional Rounds networks are on a mission providing feedback to schools about the importance of students academic discussions. Students who engage in academic discourse and practice their learning by sharing it with others either orally or in written form are more engaged and retain learning at deeper levels. Below our scholars engage in structured conversations in response to intentional plan activities in Mrs. Lara's 4th grade Science class at South Elementary School. The instructional rounds networks also provide feedback and support to schools on the area of Depth of Knowledge. Teachers use Depth of Knowledge to plan lessons with questions and activities that challenge all of our scholars at higher levels.

Hands-On Learning
PISD DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM SCHOLARS AT NORTH ELEMENTARY- EXCELLING IN TWO LANGUAGES
Our dual language students continue to use English and Spanish as means to learn all the academic content. In the dual language program highly interactive classrooms, students participate in structured conversations with their bilingual partners to share their learning. The dual language team of educators below observed pre-kinder, kinder, and first grade teachers in action implementing the Preview, View, and Review (PVR) instructional strategy to support acquisition of two languages in the primary grades and then gave constructive feedback to teachers to improve teacher efficacy. Great days of learning and growing for all!
Plainview ISD Exceptional Education Quarterly Reviews Committees
Our Plainview ISD Dyslexia teachers offer support to our dyslexia students through various methods. One of the methodologies used includes a multisensory teaching approach (MTA), a multisensory curriculum designed to be used with students in grades K-12. MTA includes all instructional components for reading, handwriting, and spelling, such as the study of the English language for reading and spelling, such as the study of the diacritical markings, automaticity, comprehension, and spelling/composition. MTA also has supplemental components to support student learning, such as alphabet skills, phonological awareness, verbal expression, and listening comprehension. Our bilingual students also use the Esperanza program to help support their Spanish language needs.
PK-12 Research-Based Math Instructional Framework
The PISD Leadership and Committee meetings composed of university professors, parents, teachers, school administrators, and central office staff are in the final stages of creating the PK-12 research-based Math framework that will benefit all educators and students. The Math teams have received professional learning opportunities on best practices and will conclude the Math framework by the end of the 2023 Spring.
The district team has also observed instruction in the Math classrooms to determine how students best learn Math. The Math framework includes a district wide instructional vision, key beliefs, and stakeholders roles to support the area of Math. The Math framework will help us align curriculum writing, train teachers, and align purchase of high quality instructional materials.
Plainview ISD has received an additional Texas Education Agency (TEA) grant for the purchase of elementary high quality Math instructional resources and professional learning for the 2023-2024 school year. The ultimate goal in creating this Math framework is to increase academic achievement in the area of Math. Above, Mrs. Landeros, 3rd grade teacher at North, creates a balance between conceptual and procedural teaching to ensure she reaches all of her students. Below the district PK-12 Math leadership and committee members are engaged during training by the Texas Education Agency Math approved provider on best practices.

Student Productive Struggle
What is Productive Struggle?
Productive struggle is the process of effortful learning that develops grit and creative problem solving. When students face problems they don’t immediately know how to solve (like on new assessments), we don’t want them to give up. We want them to engage in making connections to things they already know, think creatively and try different avenues towards solutions.
Productive struggle is a state of engagement that enables students to work through increasingly challenging problems and new problems they have never seen before. In this way, making things harder on your students so they will stretch their brains can be a good thing.

GIFTED & TALENTED STUDENTS
Second graders are working on their Performance Standards Project (PSP) called States on Parade. Students write a proposal and select a state they want to research. Shown is the technology component of the project. They will also create a float displaying all the facts they have learned. A parade of states will be presented in May to parents and guests.
Genius Inventions
World-wide Education
Project-Based Learning
Fourth Graders will complete the Innovation Celebration. Students research an inventor and then create an invention. May is when parents can see the innovations these students have created. Fifth graders focus on a passion for their PSP project. They get to choose a topic that interests them and they are passionate about. Always amazing to see what they choose to focus on for this year round project.
Biology and Physics Advanced Placement Learning
AP Physic students volunteered at an elementary during Science night. They hosted rotations where North Elementary students could do hands-on learning of science concepts. Students are studying the circular motion of a constant velocity buggy. They were calculating the velocity.
Calculus Advanced Placement- Devices that Support Learning
Students are using the calculator to find the volume of three dimensional objects formed by rotating spaces enclosed by functions around a vertical or horizontal axis.
Spanish Advanced Placement- Preparing to Nail the Test
Students are practicing simulated conversations and uploading them to their Google Drive in preparation for AP testing during the first two weeks of May.
Curriculum Writing Cadres and Continuous Professional Development for Teachers
On March 3rd, 2023 our PISD Reading Language Arts curriculum cadres above received professional learning on the Reading Language Arts State adoption resources in preparation for next 2023-2024 school year. Below our teachers engaged in Math training to continue targeting high leverage standards across all grade levels at the district February 20th, 2023 professional learning event. Teachers engaged in productive struggle to solve Math problems.
