The Great Work of the SGC
Happy Friday Panthers!
In the last Panther Press, I talked about how many exciting things are happening in the next couple of weeks…we hope you join us for the Volunteer Luncheon, the Spring Showcase and our multiple celebrations of a fantastic school year. Today, I wanted to mention somethings in preparation for next school year. The School Governance Council (SGC) has been working hard to set us up for success at NPE where we continue to learn at the highest level every day.
I want to thank Lisa Langford, Diona Nadir, Lauren Lilly, Michelle Hinton, Yolane Terblanche, Melody Johnson, Corey Debrody, Michelle Kahoiwai and Lawanda Estes for being a part of this team! They have done great work and we are so grateful for their leadership! Lisa Langford, Diona Nadir, Lauren Lilly and Michelle Hinton’s terms are coming to an end and we will really miss them! We would like to welcome Camie Christensen and Rebekah McGowan to the 2018-19 team!
Next year we will continue to have four RFF (Request for Flexibility) Days, where students will not come to school and teachers will have time for Professional Development. We will be focusing on something called Standards Mastery Framework. To put that simply, the teachers will learn more about how to help students thrive at their individual learning level. If they do not understand something, what can we do to fill in the gaps to get them there? And if they already get it, how can we extend their thinking in an engaging way? The Standards Mastery Framework is a Fulton County roll out that two of our teachers Windy Widis and Heather Alterman have been a part of developing. They will be leading us in this work. The four RFF days for next year are Friday, August 31, Tuesday, October 9, Monday, February 4, Thursday, March 12th. These are the same for Webb Bridge MS and Alpharetta HS. The number of RFF days will be looked at again next year by the SGC. We will be taking input from the community to make a decision for the following year.
Lastly, the SGC has worked very hard on our new Strategic Plan. This plan will guide our work for many years to come. It aligns with the Fulton County Strategic Plan but also was developed for what we need based on a variety of data sources. You will hear more about this plan on Curriculum Night at the beginning of the school year, but we wanted to give you a sneak peek (below). Enjoy!
I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! See you soon!

We are encouraging parents with students in grades K-2 to purchase their framed art from 5:30-6:30 and students in grades 3-5 from 5:30-6:30. If you have students in both groups, pick a time that works best for you. Or avoid the long payment line by buying ahead of time. To pre-order send in cash or check ($25 per frame) to your child’s teacher. Please make checks payable to New Prospect Elem. Please include your child/children’s names on the check or envelope with the cash. If you pre-buy and attend the show, we will have a separate line and just need to mark off that you picked it up. If you pre-buy, but do not attend the show, the framed artwork will be sent home with your student on Friday 5/11. Thanks for your support!

At Alpharetta High School-May 17th!
Alpharetta High School Science National Honor Society would like to present a wonderful opportunity for students at your elementary school to learn about science in a fun-filled night of experiments, activities, and events: Science Night.
Science Night presents students with the unique opportunity to learn about real-world applications of science concepts not covered in school through interactive experiments and demonstrations. Students will not only be able to explore new areas of science, but will also develop a passion for science through our fun events.
Last year, Science Night was a huge success with students from all over the county attending, and we hope to continue enriching elementary school students this year. If possible, we would love to promote Science Night at your school by broadcasting it over the morning announcements and distributing flyers (attached below) for students to take home to their parents. Sending out emails directly to students’ parents about this event would be another phenomenal way to help spread the word about Science Night.
Science Night will take place on May 17th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at Alpharetta High School (3595 Webb Bridge Rd.)

Most grades focused on Science topics: Kindergarten wrote facts about habitats; first and third grades researched animals; second grade learned about life cycles; fourth grade searched for facts about hearing and vision; fifth grade continues to read and evaluate fantasy fiction books.
Below are some important dates. If your child has overdue books, please help him/her locate them. Thank you for your help. The Media Center will be open during May and will offer fun and educational activities.
Monday, May 7 - Last day for student check outs.
Friday, May 11 - All student books due.
