Parent Communication

Email is the best way to contact me. A smiley face report is sent home daily in the homework folder. The daily smiley face report lets you know the kind of day your child had, offers 2-way communication, and communicates upcoming events/activities. Please watch for monthly newsletters and check out our website for more information.

Our district adopted literacy program is Treasures from Macmillan/MacGraw-Hill. It is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and focuses on the five key components of beginning reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Reading is taught in whole group, small group, and developmentally appropriate work stations.

Science and Social Studies

Your child will have a homework/communication folder that will be sent home daily. Please review the information, initial the daily report, and return the folder each school day.

Opportunities to Volunteer

There are many opportunities to volunteer at Black Mountain and in our kindergarten classroom. Please consider helping in one of the following ways...

1. Join the PTO

2. Parent Liaison - Keep parents and teacher up to date on upcoming PTO and Black Mountain Events - monthly

3. Room Parents - Help plan and organize classroom events - monthly

4. Library or Computer Lab Volunteer - Assist our kindergartners with finding library books and navigating technology in the lab. Once per week.

5. Mini Museum - If you like art, this is the one for you. You will receive training regarding specific artists/styles and then teach the kindergartners to create their own piece of art related to the artist of the month. One day per month for training and one day for teaching.

6. Prep Work/Classroom Organization - help stuff homework folders, sharpen pencils, cut out game pieces, sanitize the tables, etc...

7. Reading or Math Stations - help run a reading or math station - read stories, play games, or make books with the kindergartners. 1-3 hours per week.

We will not have any parent volunteers in the classroom during the first two weeks of school. This gives me a chance to get to know my students and develop routines/procedures that fit the students needs.

I will be having a Parent Volunteer Training towards the end of August. Please watch for more information.
