Happy Fall
With this year already being full of surprises, the 5th grade teachers wanted celebrate being back in-person and host a “Fall Celebration” next Friday, October 30th in each homeroom class. In the afternoon we will watch a fun festive show and have a safe fun exchange of goodies. If your child would like please send in a sealed and individually packaged box of their favorite treat. An example would be little bags of skittles, smarties, or even fall pencils. If you choose to donate to our celebration, please make sure you donate at least 30 so we have enough for the whole class. Have them brought to school no later than Wednesday. The teachers will be safely handing out the goodies to the students. The students will decorate a bag in class. All precautions will be taken to ensure this is done safely with minimal contact. We look forward to a fun and festive afternoon.
ELA
Thank you all for taking the time to meet with us for conferences this past week, we are really loving getting to know your kiddos. We hope you had a great weekend and are excited for some cooler temperatures this week! In Reading we are continuing our work with prefixes and vocabulary within our unit on natural disasters. I am learning to identify real-life connections between words and their use. I am learning to use text structures as I read to increase my comprehension of the passage. In writing we are finishing up our rough drafts and moving on to our final copy of our persuasive essay. We ask that all students have a book to read with them in their backpacks daily, so that if they finish things early it is something they can do, as well as we have silent reading time in class. They can check out books from our school library by using Destiny and going to https://destiny.dvusd.org/ from the DVUSD start page. Students should be working on the Amplify https://reading.amplify.com/ reading website 30-40 minutes a week.

Math
This week we are continuing to learn how to do long division using whole numbers and remainders. I truly am blown away by the effort all students are putting in, and how quickly they are learning long division! Students may begin to have an exit ticket to complete for homework on math days-- but if they use their class time wisely they should be able to finish it in class. If you feel your child needs extra practice (or things to do) they are more than happy to complete our online Math Intervention program, Dreambox, or take home the Homework pages in their math binders as extra practice. As always, please reach out if you have any concerns or questions. I can't wait for another great week of math!

Science
In science our essential question continues to be "How do substances combine or change (react) to make new substances?". In the first mystery this week, students are introduced to acids, a group of substances with a reputation for being reactive. In the activity, Acid Test, students discover two ways to detect acids: they use baking soda, which fizzes when mixed with acids, or a special liquid that changes color when mixed with acids. Then, students use those methods to identify common foods that are acidic. This second Mystery this week develops the idea that chemical reactions create new materials that have useful and interesting properties. The Great Goo Experiment is a two-part activity. In Part 1, students experiment by combining different substances and watching for reactions. In Part 2, students mix glue and borax solution in clear plastic bags to observe the reaction, which creates "Mystery Goo." Thank you to all of the parents that donated supplies so every student could conduct the investigations instead of watching me demonstrate it.
