D97 Elementary Library News
September 2016
The love of libraries, like most loves, must be learned. –Alberto Manguel
Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!
We are pleased to be including the entire community of District 97 - patrons, families and staff in our monthly newsletters. Each month our teacher librarians will collaborate to bring you great information to highlight the experiences our students have in our elementary school libraries. We hope you find this information useful and value any feedback that you care to share. Please direct any comments or questions to Kathy Rolfes at Mann School (krolfes@op97.org).
Enjoy!
What will my child be doing during library time this year?
A lot! We have big plans this year! Aside from reinforcing a love of literature and supporting curriculum, we are venturing into programs like Hour of Code, and expanding opportunities for testing our creative skills. Stay tuned to future newsletters to see all that we are doing!

Check out these back to school books!
It's the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone's just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him?
The school has a rough start, but as the day goes on, he soon recovers when he sees that he's not the only one going through first-day jitters.

This charming sequel to the beloved Sophie’s Squash is the perfect antidote to the back-to-school jitters. Sophie goes to school for the first time and has no interest in making friends that aren’t squash. Here’s a gently humorous read-aloud that proves that making friends, just like growing squash, takes time.
All Jeremy wants is a pair of those shoes like the ones everyone at school seems to be wearing. Though Jeremy's grandma says they don't have room for "want," just "need," when his old shoes fall apart at school, he is more determined than ever to have those shoes, even a thrift-shop pair that's the wrong size. But sore feet aren't much fun, and Jeremy soon sees that the things he has — warm boots, a loving grandma, and the chance to help a friend — are worth more than the things he wants.
