History of Google

Google was created in 1998. Sergey Brin and Larry Page started the company. They realized the way the internet search engines ran were inefficient and wanted to do something about it. Brin and Page went to Stanford University, where Google started. They created an algorithm that found the best search results instead of the results that used the searched words the most.

Progression of Google

In 1998, when the company first started, it didn't have ads and didn't charge users, so Brin and Page didn't make a profit. When they realized they were loosing money, they started using "sponsored links". Companies would bid on a keyword, and if they won, a link to their website was one of the first results to show up. In 2001, Eric Schmidt was hired as the new CEO, leaving Brin as the president of technology and Page in charge of products. In 2002, Google became available in 72 different languages. Google Book Search was started in 2003, G-mail was started in 2004, and Google Maps and Google Earth were created in 2005. Today, Google has offices around the world, and Brin and Page plan to give up the majority of Google.

Google's Impact on Society

People used to rely on newspapers, books, maps, and telephone books for information. Now, they use Google. Google provides news quicker and cheaper than newspapers. Students can find books, articles and other resources for school projects. Google Maps serves as a GPS to help you get from one place to another without having to use a paper map. Without Google, we would have to use books or it would take longer to find a good source of information on the internet.

Product

Google Maps was introduced in 2005. It is used to find directions from one location to another. It offers street view images of locations and satellite views. The street view images are taken by a car with a camera mounted to the top of it. They drive down every possible street to get photos of different locations. Google Earth was launched in the same year, and it gives users a better look at places from street ans satellite views than Google Maps.
