Madison County Schools eLearning Days
What is eLearning?
The Madison County Schools eLearning days would offer full access to online instruction provided by each students’ individual teachers. Teachers would create lessons in Canvas, the school’s learning management system. These lessons would be interactive and relate to the curriculum for the specific class. Four eLearning days would occur throughout the school year. These days would be within the 180 days in 2015-2016 school year. Students will have access to teachers via the Internet. If students do not have Internet at home, they may attend their school and participate in a modified day or utilize a location with computers and Wi-Fi is access. These would include going to a friend’s home, using the public library, or using one of the numerous local businesses offering free Wi-Fi. Students would also have the opportunity to complete an alternative assignment with a parents request to the school.
What are the dates for the 2015-2016 school year?
All dates are:
- November 10 (half day) for grades 9-12
- February 12 (half day) for grades 9-12
- April 15 (half day) for grades 9-12
- April 19 (full day) for only grades 9 and 12
What will it look like for students?
Madison County School teachers will use Canvas to post assignments and lessons. Students access Canvas on their personal technology device. The learning management system is completely web-based. On eLearning days, students will complete lessons/assignments created by their teachers in Canvas. These lessons/assignments will be aligned to the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards. Teachers will be checking Canvas during breaks throughout the day to answer questions.
What will these days look like for teachers?
The focus of these days will be PLC (Professional Learning Community) driven for teachers. The system and school will provide staff development for teachers and staff on various topics throughout the year.
Why have eLearning days?
- According to a study completed in 2013, 45% of college students take at least one online course.
- Even face-to-face courses in college require work to be submitted electronically.
- Corporations are using eLearning for training purposes
- Most companies require online applications
- Ability to provide teachers an entire day of professional development and planning with their peers
- It is possible that, in the future, snow days could become eLearning days and would not have to be added on to the end of the school year.
How will attendance be taken?
- Teachers will take attendance through completion of assignments.
- If a student is too sick to complete the work, parents will need to follow Madison County Schools excused absence protocols. The student is still responsible for the work and will need to complete it by the class period following their return to school.
- Canvas records each student’s amount of activity and teachers and administrators have access to these analytics.
What if a student wants to eat breakfast/ lunch at school?
- Students will be asked (or parents may notify the school) prior to the eLearning day to have an accurate amount of food available.
- Breakfast and lunch will be available to any students who wish to eat.
- Bus transportation will be provided at the normal morning schedule.
- Students will be dismissed at 12:00 on half days and regular time on the full day (April 19th)
What will my student’s day look like if they attend school?
- It will be a modified schedule supervised by teachers and staff. They will have access to the school library if needed. The teachers and staff will be available for academic support as well.
Can a student work, go on a college visit, or shadow an employer during this day?
- Each student can organize their day in a manner that suits them. They will be required to complete all work before the class’s next meeting but there is no specific time requirements otherwise.
How long will each student be required to work on the computer and what will they be doing?
- Each teacher will be creating a lesson that follows the curriculum. They will have 3-4 class periods of work to complete. The approximate time required to complete each assignment is length of each class period.
- These lessons may include videos, internet research, online quizzes/assignments, commenting on a forum, writing a paper, creating a presentation, or anything else the teacher deems relevant to the curriculum.
What about students who attend PACE?
- Students will still be required to attend PACE at their normal time.
Will students in the life skills or other special education programs attend school?
- Students in Essentials/Life Skills courses will have the opportunity to participate in eLearning days. Assignments on eLearning days will address the imbedded standards for these courses.
- Students in Alternative Achievement Standards (AAS) courses will be expected to attend school on eLearning days.
