Important Reminder from the Math Department:
The Math Department would like to remind parents and students that Skyward is the grade book of record. While some teachers may be utilizing the grading feature in Canvas, the majority of the department is not. Therefore, please make sure you are looking in Skyward for updated grades and assignment lists. Thank you.
Get to know the Pre-AP Geometry Team!
The Pre-AP Geometry team for the 2016-2017 school year is Bianca Laven and Karla Mendoza. Mrs. Mendoza has been teaching for eight years and this will be her third year at FHS. Mrs. Laven has been teaching for seven years and this will be her second year at FHS. Mrs. Mendoza and Mrs. Laven have an exciting year of Geometry planned for their students!
Activities Seen Around the Math Department
Dance, Dance, Transversal in Pre-AP Geometry!
The Pre-AP Geometry students played Dance, Dance, Transversal (modeled off of Dance, Dance, Revolution) after their unit on angles. As the music played, different angle pairs would appear on the screen. Students had to move their feet to the correct position. The students were judged on how many they answered correctly by another team. The teams with the most points were able to participate in the Dance Off! The students had a lot of fun applying what they learned in this action-packed activity!
-Making Real World Connections in Algebra 1-
Learning About Reasonable Graphs!
Algebra 1 students in Tamara Bullington's class used CBRs (Calculator Based Rangers by Texas Instruments) to record their movements. The CBRs connect to a graphing calculator and produce a graph based on how the students move. The partners took turns instructing each other on how to move to match a graph given to them on the iPad. Students had a great time while learning this often difficult concept!
Mrs. Bullington instructs students how to operate the CBR, calculator, and iPad. Students will work in pairs for the activity and take turns playing each role.
The CBR is set up to record the movements based on how the student tells his partner to move. Here you can see the graph they are trying to recreate.
In this photo, you see a student directing his partner how to move, when to stop, and how fast to walk. They will look at their calculator to see how close they were at the end!
*Scavenger Hunt Around FHS in Pre-AP Algebra 2=Halloween Fun!*
Students worked in groups of two or three to tackle these problems.
Students have to solve various problems on System of Equations. Their answers take them to a different room on campus where a new problem awaits!
A group of students are having a great mathematical conversation about this problem.
