I’d like to thank so many of you for coming to the book fair last weekend. It was a huge success. So many families had such a great time and told me what a nice event this was. As far as the fundraiser goes we did amazing. We have about $8,700 in sales and if we break the $10,000 mark we get a very big percentage jump and what the library gets in return. Barnes and Noble has extended our bookfair through this weekend too! So if you or anyone you know has any shopping to do at Barnes and Noble this weekend please have them mention Trailside at the register. Cheesecakes and all of their stuff from the café count as well. So if you’re doing any holiday party food shopping or just want a latte.
I also just want to say what a great business partner Barnes and Noble has been to Trailside library specifically. For the second year in a row, they are supporting our summer library program and they are one of the only bookstores in Anchorage. I would like to show our local support by shopping in the store and show corporate Barnes and Noble that Anchorage supports its bookstores.
Books and More Books!
Barnes and Noble funded the first one. It was called a book passion grant where all titles were chosen by the students.
The second grant was funded on Giving Tuesday. Mrs. Keller had a Donor's Choose grant. Nick Bruel, the author of the Bad Kitty series, and Sonic Drive-in chose Trailside Library! The students are so excited and we will be writing some thank you notes.

Computer Science
This year I chose to focus on the program
K-3 I am showing them the hour of code website.
For 4-6: Scratch is a programming language used to create stories, games, and animations. Kids can learn Scratch by building projects and sharing them in the Scratch online community. Students will use Scratch to create superhero animations. It is designed to be a stepping stone to more advanced programming languages.
All summer, Pearl has been trying to build the perfect sandcastle, but out-of-control Frisbees and mischievous puppies keep getting in the way! Pearl and her robot friend Pascal have one last chance, and this time, they’re going to use code to get the job done. Using fundamental computer coding concepts like sequences and loops, Pearl and Pascal are able to break down their sandcastle problem into small, manageable steps. If they can create working code, this could turn out to be the best beach day ever!
With renowned computer science nonprofit Girls Who Code, Josh Funk and Sara Palacios use humor, relatable situations, and bright artwork to introduce kids to the fun of coding.
Pearl and her trusty rust-proof robot, Pascal, are enjoying a day out at the amusement park. Spinning teacups, ice cream, and of course: rollercoasters! Through the use of code, Pearl and Pascal can keep track of their ride tokens and calculate when the line is short enough to get a spot on the biggest ride of them all--the Python Coaster. Variables, if-then-else sequences, and a hunt for a secret hidden code make this a humorous, code-tastic day at the amusement park!
Techy kids will get familiar with Scratch 3.0 using this beginner's guide to coding. Difficult coding concepts become fun and easy to understand as budding programmers build their own projects using Scratch 3.0, the latest software from the world's most popular programming language for beginners.
Make a Dino Dance Party or create your own electronic birthday cards. Build games, simulations, and mind-bending graphics as you discover the awesome things computer programmers can do with Scratch 3.0. Coding Projects in Scratch, 2nd Edition, uses a visual step-by-step approach to split complicated code into manageable, easy-to-digest chunks so that the most impressive projects become possible.

Worldbook Online
World Book Encyclopedia: The Anchorage School District purchases a subscription for all students so we should be using it! World Book Encyclopedia online is more than just an encyclopedia though. It has a great place for early readers to practice reading and wonderful facts, videos, activities, maps, games, science projects, a dictionary, and more for those curious minds. Check it out and let me know what you think!
