Grant Monthly
September 2017
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!
I will create a monthly newsletter and post it on our school webpage during the school year. No paper copies will be created.
I will also tweet the link at the beginning of the month (follow Grant at #GrantElemNPS or me at #TroyBerryman)
We are WILD ABOUT LEARNING at Grant Elementary!
Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures
In the mornings:
- please do not park directly in front of the entry gate and wait with your child. This is for drop off only. Please pull forward in front of our building to allow other parents to pull in, drop off, and be on their way.
- please don't drop off your students until 7:45am or later. We have no supervision on the playground and don't open the gym doors until 7:50am.
In the afternoons:
- do not park and leave your car unattended in the pick up lane or in the street. This just slows down the process for everyone!
- do not ask your student to cross the street in the middle of the street. Please use the crosswalks!
- Please be patient and courteous with other parent drivers
- do not use the north parking lot to drop off or pick up (unless you are using the handicapped area)
Thank you for helping keep our students safe!
Please Consider Joining our PTO!
Our meetings are usually the first Monday of the month at 6:30 in the Grant Library. Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 5 due to Labor Day.
We need help running the various committees and family events that we host. And we're always looking for ideas about how to help our teachers and classrooms!
School Picture Day is Sept. 5!

Information about Head Lice
No, we do not have an outbreak of head lice at Grant! But whenever you have 230 students in close quarters, you're bound to have it sometime. Here are the steps the school (and you) can take to minimize your exposure to head lice:
Screening for head lice is done as the need arises. Infected children will be excluded from school until treatment is received and lice are cleared. We suggest that you examine your child's hair at the beginning of the school year and periodically throughout the year. If you detect head lice or nits, contact the school nurse so that we can give you further information and examine students in your children's classes. Also, notify the parents of your children's playmates so that they can check their hair.
INFORMATION ABOUT HEAD LICE:
The head louse usually stays on the head, attaching its eggs (nits) to the shaft of the hairs. Lice can reproduce quite rapidly since the eggs usually hatch within a week and the newly hatched young reach maturity and reproduce eggs within two or three weeks. Lice lay eggs on the hair shaft. The eggs are white or gray in color. They look like dandruff, but cannot be brushed or shaken off the hair.
TRANSMISSION OF HEAD LICE:
Lice are usually acquired by direct contact with an infected person or indirectly by contact with personal belongings, especially clothing or headgear. Long hairstyles, the use and exchange of headbands, and the use and exchange of protective headgear in athletic programs create conditions for lice to spread.
TREATMENT OF HEAD LICE:
Several types of shampoo prescribed to kill lice are on the market. You may consult your physician for recommended treatment.
PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY FOR NONPRESCRIPTION LICE TREATMENTS:
- Use shampoo as directed.
- Use Debac comb (fine-toothed comb) to remove nits (lice eggs).
- Put on clean clothes after shampooing and bathing.
- Wash all clothing, towels, and bed linens used by persons with head lice; using very hot water and soap.
- Dry-clean all clothing (including hats and coats) that cannot be washed.
- All initially-infected persons should be retreated in 8-10 days.
- To prevent spread, articles that come in contact with the head, neck, or shoulders should not be shared. (For example: combs, brushes, towels, hats, coats, etc.)
- A child with nits or pediculosis should be excluded from school until treated.
Grant T-shirts are only $5
Pre-packaged snacks only, please!
Dear NPS Families,
This letter is to inform you about a new guideline that will be implemented in all NPS elementary buildings at the start of the 2017 school year.
The safety of our children is of utmost importance. We have many students with a wide range of severe, life threatening allergies to various food products. To keep our children safe we are asking that any food products that are brought into the classroom as treats are prepackaged items with ingredients listed.
Thank you for your support in keeping our kids safe.
