We also ask that students not cut through the parking lot on the front of the building, but instead cross at the crosswalks. Students cannot be seen cutting through the cars and we don't want a child to get hit.
Parent Engagement Survey
Our annual MPSD Parent Engagement Survey is coming soon. Families will have the opportunity to share your feedback during the survey window of October 26, 2021 though November 21, 2021. All parents/guardians will receive an email with a unique survey link. We truly value your feedback on this survey and use the results with our Building Leadership Team to make decision directly impacting our Jefferson students.

Conversations with Children Before or After Behaviors Occur
This week, Ms. Maedke (General Education Behavioral Specialist) shared with Staff conversations they can have with children before and/or after a negative behavior choice. What can you do at home to help children? This article focuses on “8 Things to Say When Disciplining Your Children” because when a caregiver is in the situation, it’s sometimes hard to find the right words to help them turn their behavior around. This article also has links within that focus on a concept or strategy described. For example, the fourth item to say to a child could be, “If you don’t pick up your toys, you won’t be able to play at the park today.” and within this statement is a link for If/Then statements to click on to find out more examples and HOW to use this strategy along with other warning signals you could potentially use at home. This article has a lot of information and strategies that caregivers can use right away, so enjoy!

October is Bullying Prevention Month
Each year all elementary students receive classroom lessons on bullying through our Second Step curriculum. The 4th and 5th graders are currently learning all about how they can recognize, report and refuse bullying happening to themselves or to others. The K-3rd graders will be having these lessons in the coming months. The definition of bullying is as follows:
Bullying is when someone keeps being mean to someone else on purpose. The person it's happening to hasnt been able to make it stop. It is unfair and one-sided
I’m sure that you noticed that a few of the words above are bolded! We, as a district, take a strong stance against bullying. Having the students, as well as parents, understand what constitutes a true bullying situation helps us to respond appropriately to those instances. In true bullying situations the behaviors happen more than once. They keep happening. The behaviors also need to be happening on purpose. This means that the behaviors are intentional. Bullying is also one-sided, meaning that only one person is participating in the mean behaviors, and the other person is not doing anything back.
Examples of Bullying:
Hurting someone's body or belongings continuously
Using words to hurt someone's feelings continuously
Leaving someone out on purpose continuously
Getting others to be mean to, or exclude others continuously
Recognizing a situation as bullying is the first step taught to students in school. If a situation is happening over and over, intentional and one-sided, the situation may be bullying.
After it is recognized that the behavior may be bullying, we teach students to Report or Refuse. Reporting bullying means that the situation is brought to the attention of an adult or staff member so that steps can be taken to ensure the safety of the student. Refusing bullying is assertively telling the person to stop. It is important to note that even if the student reports or refuses a bullying situation, they can report or refuse it again if it continues.
If you suspect bullying may be happening in our school, please reach out to a staff member.

Please go to this link to sign up: https://manitowoc-shipbuilders-youth-basketball.sportngin.com/home
Please try to register by October 15, so we have an idea of rosters and how many players we will have. Registration will remain open after October 15. We have a payment plan & multiple children discount as options to help make this an affordable experience. If cost is an issue, please email Coach Garbe (garber@mpsd.school).
