TJH Update #10
September 25, 2019
A Message from Dr. Mitzner
Legacy Parent Academy
Katy ISD will continue its ongoing series of Legacy Parent Academy, this time focusing on cyberbullying.
The presentation will be made by Edie White, coordinator of Bullying Prevention and Student Support; and Kris Mitzner, principal of Tays Junior High. The focus of the presentation is “Cyberbullying prevention and identification, how to respond to threats, the warning signs to protect students from falling prey to this epidemic, and reporting of bullying or bully-like behavior.”
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Legacy Stadium Rooms ABC.
According to the district, the “Legacy Parent Academy is a series of informational sessions specifically designed to assist parents by providing valuable information that relates to topics that go beyond the academic experience.” Other presentations during the 2019-20 sessions include topics that address emotional well-being, college preparedness, and college financial aid. View each session title for more information, including presenters and a session description.
A live stream of the event will be available beginning about 10 minutes prior to the start time at http://media.katyisd.org/katy-isd-administration.

Dr. Kris Mitzner

Fall Book Fair
Fall Book Fair begins Sept. 30 and ends Oct. 4th (closes at 11 am on Oct. 4th). Scholastic has added a feature that I think parents will find very helpful. Instead of sending cash or checks with your students, parents can create an eWallet account (like a debit) for students to use. I have attached information that will explain how it works.

Thank you for your support!
This week in Home Base
This year, Advisory was changed to Home Base, but it is still used to complete classwork and homework. However, it is a 31 minute personal device free period. On Mondays and Fridays for the first 15 minutes maximum, the students do a weekly grade check as well as goal setting/reflection, and on Wednesdays they complete a Home Base lesson. Tuesdays and Thursdays are treated as days where students can be pulled to different classrooms to complete missing work or receive additional support in a subject. We also continue to offer tutorials before and after school.
Sixth Grade Home Base Lesson
Grade 6, Lesson 5 Personality Change
Family Lesson Summary
This week’s lesson is about how people’s personalities change as they grow up. Sometimes people’s personalities change because of experiences they have, and sometimes because they work hard to change their personalities.
Family Lesson Question
Ask your child to describe his or her own personality. Describe for your child how you’ve seen his or her personality change, and the good things you see in it now.
Seventh Grade Home Base Lesson
Grade 7, Lesson 5 Personality Change
Family Lesson Summary
This week’s lesson is about how people’s personalities change as they grow up. Personalities come from the brain, and as brains change and develop, personalities can also change.
Family Lesson Question
Ask your child to describe his or her personality. Describe for your child how you’ve seen his or her personality change, and the good things you see in it now.
Eighth Grade Home Base Lesson
Grade 8, Lesson 5 Overcoming Failure
Family Lesson Summary
This week, your child will learn that making mistakes and failing can feel bad, but they’re also an opportunity to get better at something. Your child will think about ways to get better using these techniques: asking for help, using a new strategy, and working harder.
Family Lesson Question
Ask your child to describe a personal experience that involved making a mistake or failing at something. Together think about how that experience can be used as an opportunity to get better. Talk about a time you failed at something and how you learned from the experience.

CLOSE-UP PROGRAM - ONLY FOR 7TH GRADERS
Close Up is a dynamic, hands-on, civic education program for students! With over 40 years of experience, almost 15 of them working with Katy ISD, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization; and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. This trip will complement the curriculum that will be taught in your child’s next year 8th grade American History class and is designed to inspire and empower your student with this incredible experience.
Close Up’s programs are designed to give students direct opportunities to interact with government and history by traveling to Williamsburg Virginia, Mt. Vernon, Alexandria, Gettysburg and Philadelphia. This is sure to be a fun and exciting experience that will provide lifelong memories for our students.
To learn more about the trip, the district will be holding an informational meeting On Tuesday October 8 at 6:30pm, in the 1200 Rooms at the ESC/Merrell Center to discuss cost, trip dates, scholarship application processes and other program logistics. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact me directly. I can be reached by phone at 281-234-2470 or email at christinemhewitt@katyisd.org
If you have heard about this wonderful opportunity from the past years and are ready to sign up so you are guaranteed a spot – let me know and I will get you the links to put in your first installment!! We have had the LARGEST group 3 years running!
I look forward to working with you to provide this incredible opportunity to the students of Tays Junior High!
